Concern over Diabetes - 4yo

Hi there,
I’m just looking for advice about anyone whose little ones have been diagnosed with diabetes. My just turned 4yo has been having symptoms for a few weeks. Saying she’s tired constantly, even after just waking, being very irritable with mood changes, saying she’s hungry all the time (although not always eating all her dinner etc), sporadic tummy pains and a few times recently wetting through her pull ups in bed. She hasn’t seemed to be dramatically drinking a lot more and she has perhaps lost a tiny bit of weight but she has had a bit of a growth spurt recently. She is having blood test next week and doc thought diabetes would come on more quickly so wasn’t too concerned- hence why we’ve waited a week for the test . So I guess my question is for people with experience, did your lo’s symptoms come on gradually at first or was it just extremely sudden? And did they have all the symptoms or just a few? Just Looking for reassurance I guess as I’m having sleepLess nights waiting for this test!! Thank you!

If you think she may have Type 1 you need to know asap, not in a few days. I was fobbed off by my GP. I asked to see the other one in the practice and refused to leave until they tested her urine for glucose. We were in an ambulance on the way to hospital within ten minutes. This was ten years ago when DD was diagnosed aged 3. When we got to hospital her blood glucose was 34 (it should be between 4 and 7).

He symptoms were tiredness, slight weightless, and constantly drinking. I noticed the symptoms over a couple of weeks.

I'm genuinely not trying to alarm you, please don't think I am, but Type 1 is not something to mess about with like your GP seems to be.

Thanks for the reply. We did a urine sample and that came back negative so I’m assuming that’s also an indication it isn’t T1. Possibly if it had been he may have been more proactive.

Just be aware that blood glucose levels vary throughout the day so at the time they did the dip test her glucose levels may have been within range. i.e. if she hadn't eaten for a while beforehand.

My kids aren’t T1 but my husband is. His weight loss was quite dramatic over a couple of months (3stone!!) until he finally went to the docs. He was drinking more but not over the top.

Did doc not test blood sugars there and then? They normally have machines with them.

My husband’s was 27 when he went in but was sent home and told to go and get a blood test the following week (Friday appt). Luckily doc phoned later in the day and told him to head to hospital where he was given insulin and a crash course in injecting then sent home again!!

My son was just turned 7 when he was diagnosed. Looking back it was about 3 months before he showed signs of moodiness then the thirst and bed wetting was about 3 weeks before diagnosis. It was my sister visiting and commenting on his appearance that made me realise he had lost weight. It's a quick finger prick test, it really needs to be done soon if it is T1. Delays can cause serious health issues. Fingers crossed it's not OP, wouldn't wish it for any child
