House making a hooting/honking noise

Since we moved in 4 years ago when it's very windy (Storm Ciara) there a hooting/honking noise in the house.

Our attached neighbours have lived here since the 70s and they think it's their TV aerial. I think it sounds more like the chimney. We've had a cowl put on the chimney last year to no effect. Before we remove the chimney (and spend £££) which do you think it's more likely to be? For reference the sound is a bit like a very low honking saxophone (but obviously only one note 😂)

I have a clanking somewhere in my roof. Have had a new roof which has made no difference. Roofers checked everything when up there. I went up there to investigate when it was all exposed also. Drives me potty when wind is up. I sometimes feel the only possible solution is just to tear it down and rebuild - this sometimes seems a sensible solution - that’s how maddening it is sometimes. Good luck with the hooting/honking. Given the choice I’d take clanking I think. Grin

What about the conservatory as a possible culprit? All windows and doors replaced EXCEPT in the conservatory.

Whenever I have experienced this, it has been the windows.

Cooker hood vent?

My porch hoots in the wind. Do you have a porch?

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 15/02/2020 23:46

We have it too,it's the windows.

I think that sound would come from wind going through something tubular, like maybe a soil pipe.

Got it! This is Whooodo! It's Rolf Harris, on the run, in the airing cupboard, with his Didgeridon't!

We get this - it's the wind blowing cross the top of the flue and it sounds like blowing across a coke bottle.
When the kids were small we used to say it was the alien on the roof, and our neighbour used to complain about it although there's actually nothing we can do to stop it.

Sitting here listening to it it does sound on the roof rather than windows. I'm in our bedroom which overlooks the conservatory and the noise is away from the conservatory direction and away from the kitchen and the cooker hood.

It really does sound like a digeridoo! That's it!

We have this problem too! We have had a new front door and lots of work done to fix leaking central heating. Convinced its to do with the pipes as ours go down the middle of the house and the sound seems to generate from there. It's very recent for us and very annoying.

I had my chimney relined with a steel flue a couple of years ago and it sometimes makes a wind chime noise in windy/wet weather. Also amplifies the neighbours voices when they are chatting while they smoke at their back door. That can be quite entertaining.
