Do a walking tour, they are fantastic. Berlin has history on every street, we absolutely loved it.

Boopear · 13/02/2020 22:15

Fat Tyre cycling tours are great, even if you're not a big cyclist (it's all flat and you stop every 5 minutes!). The guides are really great though and it is such a good way to see the highlights.

Stasi museum is also a hit and, if teens with you, both tech museums.

The Berlin card is also a good deal. It covers all travel and you get loads of discounts.

Boopear · 13/02/2020 22:17

Oh.and the Reichstag. Especially at dusk. Is free but you do need to book your slot a fair few weeks in advance.

ssd · 13/02/2020 22:22

How does the Berlin card work, where do you buy it and does it cover travel into mitte from TXL?

celtiethree · 13/02/2020 22:25

Second Fat Tyres was v good. We went out to the Olympic stadium which was also worth a visit!

whiteroseredrose · 13/02/2020 22:29

I was fascinated about the Berlin Wall and what life would have been like then. We found the Tranenpalast (palace of tears) really interesting. It's just near Friedrichstrasse station and is free.

edgehorn · 13/02/2020 22:33

Street food at markthalle neun

Boopear · 13/02/2020 22:38

You can buy the Berlin card (Pass) at the airport, it's time stamped from point of purchase for the number of days bought and, yes, can be used in from the airport. There is the one with inclusive entry for some attractions but we went for the basic travel with discounts which worked out cheaper.

EmptyFieldOfFucks · 13/02/2020 22:39

Currywurst Museum!

surlycurly · 13/02/2020 22:55

The Pergamon Museum. I blooming loved it!

whiteroseredrose · 13/02/2020 23:12

Second the Reichstag.

We also went to see Cabaret in a Tipi near the Reichstag.

dazzlingdeborahrose · 15/02/2020 00:23

Hackesche Hofe
Reichstag
Charlottesburg palace
Think the currywurst museum closed down ☹️

TheVoiceInTheShed · 15/02/2020 10:38

Sachsenhausen - the concentration camp that was the blueprint for the rest. Book an accompanied tour - good value.
It's obviously depressing but important to see.

katewhinesalot · 15/02/2020 10:43

A hop on off bus tour to begin with. We went all the way round, stopping only to get off at the furthermost points, then later on, and the next day made our own way to the places we wanted to revisit.

sunshinesupermum · 15/02/2020 10:47

The Jewish Museum is a must for any visitor to Berlin, also Checkpoint Charlie. Hope you have a good time.

sunshinesupermum · 15/02/2020 10:49

TheVoiceInTheShed I second Sachsenhaussen although the time may be limited as you need a halfday to visit it. It was the 'highlight' of our trip to Berlin a couple of years ago and few people realise that it's just 30 min train journey from Berlin.

notacooldad · 15/02/2020 10:55

You havent got long in Berlin really.
If the weather is nice on Sunday I'd recommend Mauerpark. Half f it is a flea market and street food the other is different people performing. Theres usually everything from magicians, ie man bands, rap artist singer/ song writer types.
The Turkish market is good and has fabulous food.
Theres so much to do!

SixStringFanjo · 15/02/2020 11:18

Reichstag definitely - Brandenburg Gate & Holocaust Memorial both close by & free
DDR Museum
Markthalle Neun street food
If time, daytrip to Potsdam

Puffthemagicdragongoestobed · 15/02/2020 11:22

Checkpoint Charlie for pictures. The cross the road to the Cold War museum (I think this is how it was called) for the historic background and footage. Then follow the wall trail, ie where you can see where the walk used to be. East side gallery to see remaining parts of the wall. Holocaust memorial. Reichstag.
We also went to Tempelhofer Feld, the old City Airport which was converted into a park and allotments. But it’s probably not enough time for this.

Ulvie · 15/02/2020 11:26

Reading with interest. We go in April.

fairynick · 15/02/2020 11:31

If you want to see a few of the main things at one, do the Reichstag building, Brandenburg Gate and Memorial to the murdered Jews all one after another because they’re all basically next to each other.
Wouldn’t recommend going up the TV tower, it’s overpriced and there are other sky bars nearby.
Such a great city, have fun!

notapizzaeater · 15/02/2020 11:31

Sachsenhausen - was harrowing but very important.

We did checkpoint Charlie, and the Bunker museum (long but also interesting)

Was easy to get round, all very clean. Don't cross the road though unless green man on , it's a fine !

MrsTJOsbornee · 15/02/2020 12:43

Agree with all pp, but if you want somewhere good for breakfast look up steel biker cafe. Amazing.

notacooldad · 15/02/2020 12:48

I am gussing your trip is nearly over seeing you posted on Thursday

For other people looking at this thread I would say to get the mos out of a trip to Berlin think about your situation
Are you going as a couple and having a bit of a romantic break or with a friend and going to let your hair down a bit or with a child or young person.
There is so much do in Berlin for every taste from wild night life to fantastic art and history museums, good food to the currywurst!!
I think you need to narrow down your interests. Do you want to see the old or recent history of Berlin, are you intrested in the shopping, the river walks, the East side gallery. Where are you stopping, in the Mitte or one of the neighbourhoods. Everywhere has something to offer.
I love Berlin and try to go three times a year. Summer is good when the weather is nice but it can get busy. Autumn and Spring are good. I like winter for the Christmas market but it can ( like most of Europe of course) get very cold.

katzenellenbogen · 15/02/2020 13:40

@EmptyFieldOfFucks @dazzlingdeborahrose
The Currywurst Museum is most definitely no more Sad
