Three job offers- help me choose!

I've recently been looking at returning to work and I now have three job offers on the table, and I'm so torn! They all have pro and cons, and I keep deciding then changing my mind. I'll give you some background and then describe the jobs.

Background - admin and customer service background from when I left school, 11 years out of regular employment after I fell pregnant with my second DC and relationship broke down, also my eldest had massive health issues. While taking time out I've volunteered on PTA and taken on a senior admin role there, volunteered at Scouts, facilitated the Freedom Programme, and am currently studying a degree in Chemistry at the OU, so I've kept busy outside of the home.

Job 1 - receptionist/admin for a clinical research company, full time Mon- Fri 9-5. Attracted me because it's related to my degree and thought it would bring that and my admin experience together. However, commute isn't great, would mean my youngest being in childcare before and after school for long hours, and would pay a fortune in train fairs. Salary is just above minimum wage.

Job 2 - just round the corner from Job 1, but part time admin role, not science related. Bit of a better salary than Job 1 (obviously pro rata), but same commute and same cost in train fares. However, would do away with needing childcare as could fit in with school hours.

Job 3 - contact centre where could work 9-5, but also work from home so could do overtime evenings and weekends from home if required. They've also offered me a 20 hour admin role so 20 hours would be doing that, and could make up to full time hours answering calls either from home or in office. Salary again just above minimum wage BUT - the commute is a 15 minute drive even at busy times, free parking available and even if doing 9-5 wouldn't need to put my daughter in breakfast club and she wouldn't spend as long in after school club. Also, in case either child was off school I could work from home, could also do this during school holidays too.

All roles are within family businesses that have grown over the past few years and are continuing to expand, and have indicated that they would like to give me the opportunity to grow my career with them as they do so. I love the ethics and dynamics of all the workplaces, and they all had a lovely feel to them, and I think I would perform well at any of the companies. The science one is really pulling me but I'm unsure about the long hours my daughter will be in childcare, and whether I'll break even after paying out travel and childcare costs. I've been doing the degree not necessarily for a career in science but to improve my employability and to keep my brain active. So, mumsnet jury, any feedback to help me choose?

Definitely job 3.

georgialondon · 13/02/2020 20:27

Job 3. It's a no-brainer. (the decision not the job!)

Simonsaysitschristmas · 13/02/2020 20:30

Job 3 stood out to me too.

hilbil21 · 13/02/2020 20:32

Definitely 3

Ilikewinter · 13/02/2020 20:33

Job 3 also. Congratulations on being offered all 3 though!

BeerMyHold · 13/02/2020 20:34

Job 3. As someone who does a big commute and has kids.

Mixingitall · 13/02/2020 20:34

Job 3.

Job 3!

Queenoftheashes · 13/02/2020 20:35

Yes job three. I regret my commute.

Canadianpancake · 13/02/2020 20:36
  1. There's time for career jobs when your children are a bit more independent and it won't cost an arm and a leg for childcare. Plus, they're only young once. You've waited this long, another year or two won't make that much difference.
TheGirlWhoLived · 13/02/2020 20:37

Job 3, never ever ever take working from home for granted!

lovelove9 · 13/02/2020 20:39

Job 3

Tempjob · 13/02/2020 20:39

Job 3. I do a three hour commute each day and it is hell (and dangerous!). Avoid at all costs!!!

Elouera · 13/02/2020 20:42

Congrats on getting 3 offers! I agree, job 3. Getting back into the work force is the main thing. Maybe in a year or 2 you then decide you do want something more science based, but by then, the kids will be older. Nothing worse than a LONG, expensive commute. It really wears you down.

LadyRivers1 · 13/02/2020 20:43

Wow! Thank you everyone. I think I was set on job 1, until i interviewed for and was offered job 3, with the admin role as well, which changed things as I was unsure about returning to a call centre environment, but I got a great feeling from the place, even if it was just the contact centre role. There's lots of opportunity for progression in all roles, and yes, I think I would rather have that opportunity practically on my door step. Have to think of the work/life balance as well, and the cost of the commute!

How old are your kids now?

Episcomama · 13/02/2020 20:47

Job 3. Definitely not job 1!!

Dozer · 13/02/2020 20:47

Job 3 best on paper. You could seek a science job once you’ve completed your degree. My concern with job three is that the “overtime” from home could be expected/unpaid rather than an option? Also, what would the phone calls be about? If dealing with irate people a lot that’d be stressful.

Job 2 sounds better than job 1.

LadyRivers1 · 13/02/2020 20:53

@Antihop 13 and 10 - so childcare only really needed for one, and not forever. Couldn't leave them at home together right now.

@Dozer - no, not expected and definitely paid, I will do some standard shifts WFH and could pick up overtime if I wanted. Also, all jobs would be dealing with customers so would have to deal with irate people at some point in any role. Call content will vary.

Not 1. Admin jobs rarely take you closer to the core business of an organisation. It's like being a bookkeeper in the National Gallery, you're near it but not doing it.

Get your degree, work from home, then get the science job

RB68 · 13/02/2020 20:56

I would say Job 3

I don't think you can put a value on that level of flexibility but also the being available for your kids especially if one has health needs

3luckystars · 13/02/2020 20:57

No commute and balance with family life is worth more than money.

RB68 · 13/02/2020 20:58

What are you planning to do with the Chem degree? Can you choose the one that gives you the flexibility to build a career on that side - not nec in the workplace for e.g.

MissBPotter · 13/02/2020 21:16

Job 3, jobs with no flexibility are hard and so are long commutes.
