Anyone experience engagement ring that constantly breaks?

Not sure if we are allowed to mention names but I'm happy to if we are allowed.

Bought an engagement beginning of ring 2018, 7 months later a diamond falls out. Took it in and they said there was damage to the claws and it was my fault, as it happens I took out insurance so that covered the repair which was around £300, I was confused at their opinion as it was a ring within a cluster so not the obvious stone that would be damaged and I never do anything particularly with the rings on, so I was unsure how it could have got damaged other than snagging on clothes.

I got the repair and was super careful with it going forward, less than a year later the stone goes cloudy. They send it back off again and low and behold thy said again i have damaged it and it's my fault. They say the diamond sustain "impact damage" and the all four claws have been damaged, I don't see again how this is possible, it's not in a place where it is likely to get damaged as it's between others so why haven't they had the same damage and it's the same diamond again I had the problems a year ago with.

They have been absolutely horrid with me, customer service is rude and unhelpful. I told them I want it back and wouldn't be paying them nearly £300 for a repair on a ring that has two two incidents in less than 3 years. I have been so careful with it this time. I have barely wore it, so I feel sick about it. The ring cost £2500, I have an engagement ring and eternity ring that form a set that cost a further £700 each. So nearly £3500 worth of jewellery that is worthless as I just can't wear them.

I 100% accept of I had done something but I've been so super careful and I have mostly just not worn them. I take them off even when I change these days to avoid snagging, I had my previous engagement ring for 10 years with no problems at all, was in perfect condition.

As far as the ring goes, I'll report it trading standards and the ombudsman, Customer services told me that I can't as I need to prove there is something wrong with it but frankly a ring that can't be worn costing that amount it surely proof enough. My last ring cost only £900 and had no issues. I worn that every day and we renovated a house when I worn that ring without any issues, if there were issues then I would have accepted it but this ring is so ridiculous. Plus I thought diamonds were supposed to be super strong, how could it be damaged?

Where did the ring come from?

Someonesayroadtrip · 12/02/2020 21:08

Ernest Jones

It doesn't sound great I must say. I have worn mine continuously for 20 years without incident and my MIL's lasted 55 years before it became so worn she decided to replace it.

Impact damage? To a diamond? What do they think hit it? A planet?

You need to get a second opinion from a reputable jeweller, I'm not sure what they sold you buy a diamond doesn't go cloudy from 'impact'.

GreenTulips · 13/02/2020 00:05

I would also seek a second option maybe the ombudsman could give you some direction.

paranoiamumma · 13/02/2020 00:08

My daughter had a ring wasn't a cluster it was a
Half caret solitaire she lost the diamond on the first it was replaced under insurance and the same happen to the second one , they refused to replace and they are still fighting it out now they are saying it's misuse. I believe hers was h s samual though.

You can damage diamonds. Especially if they already have flaws in them. They are strong but not indestructible.

Lucked · 13/02/2020 00:16

I agree you need an independent review. I found this article so perhaps asking the National Association of Goldsmiths for advice on who could do this for you. No idea what it will cost.

Thanks all. I was going to get it looked at and probably repaired when they decide to send it back.

H Samuel's is the same company as Ernest Jones. Seems lots of probably online.

I will fight it, such a disappointment though, once it's back I'll post up, I know diamonds can be damaged but the position makes it even more weird and I'm no a manual worker and if I do anything at home I take it off, so it's extremely off and clearly very fragile.

As soon as I read the title, I knew it was Ernest Jones. I had exactly this problem and I’ve since heard of loads of others who have too. I ended up returning mine and getting one from an antiques jeweller instead.

TinkysWinky · 13/02/2020 20:43

yes! exactly same problem here and same company

My SIL has had numerous problems with her engagement and wedding ring both from H Samuel.

Weirdly, my engagement ring from H Samuel has had no issues but is a "forever diamond" and not an H Samuel ring if that makes sense.

Someonesayroadtrip · 13/02/2020 21:34

Hmmmm .. guess it's just a poor company then. It is a Neil lane ring but think it's exclusive to Ernest jones. It's beyond 6 months so can't get full refund but I'll make sure I push it with ombudsmen and trading standard.

Bonkers, lesson learnt. I bought my mum a ring from there which came with diamonds missing, they dealt with it but it was brand new. Shane as my old ring was perfect, they clearly are not the same company there were 14 years ago.

Is it I didn't know that ! Her partner paid nearly £2000 pound for it like she said she can't just drop it.

Bert2020 · 14/02/2020 10:11

EJ are shocking shit! Sent mine off for replating & cleaning before wedding, came back missing a diamond. Then they twisted a claw. Shambles of a company.

Ariela · 14/02/2020 10:17

Wait a minute...a stone goes CLOUDY? Diamonds are the hardiest of things - used for cutting tools. They can't go cloudy from the inside, only the outside if say, too much heat was used in repairing. Or if its dirty, So it'd have been cloudy when you got it back after replacement, or you can clean it off.

I'd get it back and get your replacement stone checked over very carefully at another diamond specialist. I'll bet they've not replaced it with a diamond.

CornishPorsche · 14/02/2020 10:36

I have a Neil Lane ring, with I've no idea how many small diamonds in it. Its 4 years old, I wear it for everything, and no damage at all.

Maybe yours is sadly poor workmanship rather than a brand specific thing?

Bythesea315 · 14/02/2020 10:42

Yes my h Samuel one has lost the diamond twice ! Found it the first time and it was put back in sadly haven't done the second time.
Not only that when we first got it they had it re sized and broke the first one so we had to choose a new ring
So at the moment I just wear my wedding ring Im hopefully getting it replaced once we save up

Wallywobbles · 14/02/2020 11:02

Mine belonged to my great grandmother. Un damaged and I wear it for all horse and farming activities except birthing lambs.

Damntheman · 14/02/2020 13:53

Oh OP I'm sorry. My Ernest Jones ring is 13 years old now and perfectly fine, but my brother is a silversmith and takes a look at it every year (he's also resized it both bigger and smaller for me post children and weight loss). I suspect he's probably rebuilt the whole thing by now without saying anything.

I'd suggest you take it to an independent silversmith who can have a proper look at it and tell you what would need doing if you want to keep it. Take the whole set to the silversmith for review.
