Do you give calpol for “just” a temp - or do you leave a fever?

My 7 year old has had a cough since last night but has otherwise been fine - about half an hour ago I touched her and she was burning hot - I took her temp and came up as 39.5 . But she’s acting totally normal just a really quite minor cough and the temp which is much higher than I’ve ever seen her get one before !

I have been trying to get her to rest but she’s running around like a crazy person refusing to go to sleep so I feel a bit lost!

Do you give calpol for just a temp?
Should I expect to see her crash soon and suddenly look ill?

Give her Calpol, why on earth not?

My gauge is way off. I didn't realise that was a high fever. My eldest is so prone to fevers of 40.8 (weirdly always 40.8) that anything below 40 I don't even blink at. My youngest, weirdly drops his temp for illness to almost hypothermia levels - 35.2 was his lowest

Ok so I redid her temp and it was still
39.4 even after I stripped her off etc so I gave her calpol and she’s sleeping in my bed now 😄

Pit - checked mine and that’s 36.8 so seems to be working ok!

My doctor always tells me to look at the child, not the number on the thermometer. So if the child has a temp of 38.5 and is really unwell, crying etc then give something. If its 40 and the child is fine, then theres no need to treat it.

Am I missing something? I’d only take my child’s temperature if they seemed unwell to start with

Sorry, I know it's a lttle late for this time but if your child is reliable and only has Calpol when they are ill it may be worth asking if they think they need it or if they want to see how they are later on. This works well with my daughter (7) she rarely has it but is good at knowing her own body and whether she feels like she really needs it if I am on the indecisive verge!
