Any ideas what this mark on leg is? (Pic Inc)

I've had this patch off red, scaly skin on the front of my right calf, about halfway between my knee and ankle, for about 3 months now. It's about the size of a 20 pence coin. Up until about 2 weeks ago,I didn't really give it much thought, apart from putting moisturiser on it morning and evening. It was about a fortnight ago that I thought, this is taking a long time to clear up. I've thought it was just a patch of dry skin. However,I remembered reading an article in s newspaper a few months ago that said you should always get newly appearing marks and blemishes checked out, especially if they won't clear up. So I've booked a doctor's appointment for next week. But I'm now worrying it might be skin cancer? (I've never been a sun worshipper as I'm very fair skinned).

Looks like ringworm. When I've had it I've used Canesten or athlete's foot cream on it. Takes ages to clear up though and is pretty infectious - make sure you don't share towels etc with anyone.

Mine wasn't particularly itchy by the way, although when DD had it hers drove her bonkers!

See your pharmacist in the morning.

ALongHardWinter · 12/02/2020 18:20

Oh! I never thought of that. My late Dmum had ringworm on her leg,but it was much 'neater' looking,if you see what I mean. More circular and even, not all 'ragged' like this. I live alone so no risk of sharing towels, thank goodness.

Psoriasis?

TabbyStar · 12/02/2020 18:31

Is it blistery? I had a fungal infection that looked a bit like that if so.

ALongHardWinter · 12/02/2020 18:35

It's not blistery at all, just a bit flaky.
I don't think it's psoriasis,it's just a small patch. Surely psoriasis is more wide spread? And is a silvery colour? I have a friend who has wide spread psoriasis, and it looks nothing like what they have.

Paso arias is doesn’t always x9me with plaques (the silvery bits), at least not 8n 5h33arly stages, and can start very small. Sometimes mine is itchy, but no5 always. I don’t have plaques (yet)

ALongHardWinter · 12/02/2020 19:53

Actually,I've just googled some pictures of psoriasis, and it DOES look rather like some of the examples shown. It doesn't itch at all though,is not sore, and is only in that very small area. If it IS psoriasis,is it likely to spread? Even after having stayed in that one small spot for 3 months? Also,is it likely that I'd develop psoriasis at the age of 56? I always thought it was something that you developed when you were a lot younger than this.

OP I don't have medical experience but I do have experience with skin cancer (had melanoma last year).

I would say, if it's still there by the time your docs appointment comes around you should absolutely get it checked. The chances are it's nothing sinister and the doctor will be able to reassure you. But you are definitely doing the right thing to get it checked.

CottonSock · 12/02/2020 20:03

Looks like the psoriasis discs my dh has. They can last a long time

BBOA · 12/02/2020 20:09

Or eczema.... But would be itchy I think.

Walkthedinosauuuuur · 12/02/2020 20:10

It's not ringworm surely, clue is in the name.

ALongHardWinter · 13/02/2020 17:10

Thanks all of you who responded. I've got a doc's appointment next Tuesday to get it checked out.

Sorry for resurrecting this old thread but I have something that looks identical- just wondering what yours was in the end?
