Grim but help! what is your one year olds pooing like?

I’m not a poo troll before anyone accuses me! We live very rurally, can’t get a GP appointment for 3 weeks - not that I think this requires one, I have few friends with children or children young enough that they can advise; and the health visiting team is two over stretched ladies covering a huge area so I’m using mumsnet for support. I’m really grateful for the help I’ve had here over the last year.

Ok, so my DD is 13 months old and is a poo monster; 4 and 5 poos a day, the consistency of mash - not solid but not liquid enough to be diarrhoea. They are quite smelly and sticky and cleaning her uses a few wipes; I can’t link anything dietary to the consistency (we have done a lot of food diaries for her reflux and mild eczema) but I think the smell is due to her reflux medication.

She doesn’t seem in pain with her tummy or actually going.

So. How often does your one year old poo and does it look like my one year olds!?

What reflux medication does she have? My DS has vinegar smelling poo that is mainly liquid although not really diarrhoea, and he shows no discomfort. He has liquid omeprazole for his reflux.

@JustKeepOnChangingUsernames

That’s interesting, how old is your little one?

She’s on liquid omeprazole and has been for about 2 months after ranitidine was recalled and also gaviscon - she used to have a more solid poo thanks to the gaviscon but that’s disappeared in the last month or so.

My DD just turned 1 and usually goes twice a day. Maybe a porridge-like or mash consistency, sometimes more solid and sometimes more liquidy, depending on what she's eaten and how much milk she's had that day. But it does smear pretty badly and require a fair bit of wiping! She's not on any medication and seems happy enough in that department.

@DesLynamsMoustache thank you for that, that’s reassuring, I suspect it’s bothering me a bit because I’d gotten so used to her having a more solid, firmer poo.
She doesn’t seem bothered so maybe I shouldn’t worry.

My 13 month old goes once or twice a day. Usually solid, the odd one a bit softer.

NeverGotMyPuppy · 12/02/2020 11:39

Yep that's how mine at 17 months is, still very frequent I'm afraid

JustKeepOnChangingUsernames · 12/02/2020 11:49

He is 10 months and I’m going to see my doctor to rule out that the Gaviscon he was on (for eight months) hasn’t caused any long term constipation and that’s why it’s mainly liquid coming through the bowel (because it’s all that can squeeze past any obstruction). When he was on Gaviscon, his poo was solid and ever since it has been like it currently is.

DS1 had food allergies that took a while to be identified. He'd have a clear out every few days that exploded from neck to knee. At home it was an instant shower. When out, it took half a pack of wet wipes to deal with the devestation.

takeyourrubbishhome · 12/02/2020 13:35

I think maybe the frequency warrants a chat with the GP because 4-5 decent sized poos a day is on the high side, but the consistency and stench is something I've experienced. At that age, my DC1 could clear an entire room with a filled nappy. It was always hummus-like in texture, and very sour smelling. Sometimes that can be a teething thing, but I'm pretty sure his was linked to a milk allergy, and in hindsight removing the milk might have helped. We didn't really get formed poo until he was about 5.

NeverGotMyPuppy · 12/02/2020 13:48

Hm this is really interesting I always just assumed my son was frequent but maybe he isnt quite right

Whyismycatanasshat · 12/02/2020 15:06

DD has been tested for all kinds of allergies and nothing is showing.
She has had issues with having diarrhoea bugs lasting weeks and weeks - I had a post up in November/December about her having a bout lasting three weeks! But despite tests she has not been diagnosed with anything but her reflux.

@NeverGotMyPuppy it’s also got me wondering if we need to book a GP appointment (again!) as comparatively my DD seems to poo a lot!

Intolerances are rare, especially compared to allergies, but is another possibility to consider. It is quite normal though for short time lactulose intolerance after stomach bugs so that might be exacerbating things.

What was she tested for?

Whyismycatanasshat · 13/02/2020 11:59

She started up with Diarrhoea again last night (whilst I was on a rare trip out, so usually useless DP had to manage the wee poo monster explosion! Some of you may remember my last post about him) but I worked out this is the longest we’ve been diarrhoea free since she was born. (2.5 months) DP blames the baby group we go to because she mouths everything as do many of the other children but I refuse to stop going.

Anyway, she has been repeatedly tested for lactose, cows milk protein - told it isn’t the same thing - then many others including gluten, soya, ground nuts, something related to fructose, legumes... quite a few! And all come back negative.

How is it going OP?.DS has done 5 today

SnugStars · 15/02/2020 18:12

My daughter has Cows Milk Protein Intolerance and reflux, she’s on Liquid Omeprazole and until recently if she didn’t have enough fruit could be a little bit constipated, marble like stools. The last month though it’s been like porridge and smells awful, regardless of what she’s been eating.

99problemsandthecatis1 · 15/02/2020 18:12

This last fortnight and we've had 4 or 5 a day for some reason, this is not the norm for DC2!

They smell vinegary when teething.

Consistency from wet Weetabix to paste, occasionally more solid.

Whyismycatanasshat · 15/02/2020 18:42

@NeverGotMyPuppy DD has now got a bug, definitely. She’s not herself but it’s a weird bug in that She’s been shouting for us at 4am when she’s had a massive amount of mush/diarrhoea poo and then having a literally liquid poo at 9am and nothing until 4am again!
Very odd.

Dr won’t see her unless she has it for 3 weeks!

OP posts:
Whyismycatanasshat · 15/02/2020 18:53

@SnugStars - lots of people mention the smell being horrible with liquid omeprazole. Very odd.

@99problemsandthecatis1 Great username! It’s so strange when you can’t quite work our why. DD has a bug but it came on 48 hours after seeing a friend who was poorly hours after our play date so I assume the bug is from them and unrelated to the many poos a day of late.

voxnihili · 15/02/2020 20:12

My DD who is 18 months has always had terrible nappies. She used to poo every other day and when she went it was everywhere. I used to fear going out on a poo day.

We went to Spain when she was 11 months old and I was making her formula from boiled Spanish tap water - her poo went solid instantly (we have a perfect prep at home). I don’t think it’s the prep as her poo has remained solid since (7 months). The only time it goes mushy now is from teething - and the smell is horrific!

Greaterthanthesumoftheparts · 15/02/2020 20:17

DS is 20 months, no health issues and till about 2 weeks ago was going 4-5 times a day, also soft. He eats a lot but doesn’t weigh much so I assume he’s just getting rid of a lot...
