Hello all.
Currently private renting but due to a change in circumstances we are struggling with the rent. We always pay on time but it's rediciolously tight and it is getting us into debt.

We have started bidding on houses and are quite high up on the list.

My problem now is that our tenancy agreement ends in August and we have to give two months notice. If we are offered something before this what do we do...? Pay rent on 2 properties!? As the landlord is no way going to release is early.

And if we don't get something before the end. Do we renew on a 6 monthly basis and then have the same issue anyway?

I'm getting every stressed about all this. Worst case scenario I guess we pay 2 rents for a couple of months but can't afford that .

Thank you

Forgot to add we have to give 2 months notice at the end of the tenancy. Not any time in the tenancy

Hi. I work for a HA. You should be able to claim Overlapping Housing Benefit which will cover the notice period on your previous property. Speak to your council to get the forms.

We are on universal credit though. I don't think they would do that. The rent on what we rent now is an eye watering 1450 and the HA is anything between 650 and 950

And what I pay now is the cheapest in the area! Confused

You can only pay what you can afford. If you don't have it you can't pay it.

Prioritise the HA property, give notice to your landlord as soon as possible. He may not release you early but you can also make it difficult for him by not paying rent AND refusing to give possession. I am sure that if he is faced with no rent and no property or giving you an early release, the early release makes more sense.

If you haven't got a property by the end of this 6 months, it will revert to a rolling contract. He can give 2 months notice, you can give 1.
