Help me pick a toddler bed!

We're moving our almost 2-year old to a new room soon, and are probably going to get a new bed for her. There's currently a double in there, but I'm worried the bed is too high and she'll fall out (she likes to thrash in bed!).

The question is: should we get a standard 90x190cm single, albeit a low one and one that you can attach bedrails to (see pic A), or a 70x140cm 'toddler bed', the type with inbuilt bedrails (pic B)? I feel like A would last longer, but does it defeat the purpose of getting a toddler bed?

Or forget both A and B, and somehow try to make the existing double bed work?

Thank you!

Can you put the double against a wall? Having a double is brilliant for snuggling up and reading in bed together. Also, toddler beds are not really the best to sleep in as an adult if you end up playing musical beds at 4am (I've done it......).

I wouldnt buy a toddler bed. They will grow out of it in a year or 2 (my smallish 4 year old was really too big for his from before his birthday, but since we knew we were moving country, we kept him in it a bit too long).

My nephew sleeps in a toddler bed at home, a single at mine, and a king at one granny's.

What I'm trying to say is they'll sleep in anything. I'd go for a single and a bed rail as you'll get more use out of it.

If you want a ‘big girl bed’ buy the cheapest toddler bed with rails you can find. It will last realistically to about age 2.5/3 then swap back to a single or double. Or just get a bed guard for the double and enjoy some comfort when your baby has the inevitable 3am ‘I need my mum’ nights 😁

Can you not convert her cot to a toddler bed till she outgrows it?

JoanieCash · 11/02/2020 22:32

Don’t go for a toddler bed. You’ll find yourself in there with your legs hanging over the edge. We went for similar to option A. You need full length for the 3 am wanderer that comes into you and one of you needs to escape :)

ShinyGiratina · 11/02/2020 22:46

Definitely pick a bed for your own long term comfort. The bed-hopping stage can last a looong time and sometimes it's just simpler to call it a swap halfway through the night.

My 9yo has a new bed, and yup, I've ended up in it already (and very comfy it is too!)

My 6 year old still fits in his toddler bed! We've only kept it so long because he's in the box room, so has more space to play.

VenusClapTrap · 11/02/2020 23:35

My nearly-8 year old is still in his toddler bed. It’s one of those extendable Ikea ones though. It’s been good value.

Embracelife · 11/02/2020 23:36

Get one you can fit in I.e standard fir reading stories or sleeping g there when child ill etc

happymummy12345 · 11/02/2020 23:38

My son went in a toddler bed at 17 months. I didn't want a standard single as they are much higher.
I got his in Argos. Mattress from mothercare. He's 4 and a half but still well under the weight limit so he's still in it.

We have the yellow version of this one for dd-

www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/minnen-ext-bed-frame-with-slatted-bed-base-white-s29123958/

It looks really smart, feels solid (I am constantly getting into it to cuddle dd and read stories) and will grow with her.

She’s been in it for four months now (since she turned 2) and has only fallen out once which I see as a win!

VenusClapTrap · 11/02/2020 23:49

That’s the one my dc’s have had.

Dairymilkmuncher · 12/02/2020 00:00

Single bed all the way, toddler beds are too small to get a good sleep I if you need to get in with the little one

user1333796 · 12/02/2020 00:05

Mine have the IKEA extendable Minnen too. I love how they look, especially the yellow one, but one of mine has always ended up with his face pressed into the metal and bangs his head in it and comes in with us. So the side rails are pretty useless if you have a wriggler. I wish we'd got the IKEA Utaker stackable bed in hindsight. Looks perfect for toddlers as it can be low down, a double, L shaped, etc.

pegasus02 · 12/02/2020 06:35

Thanks all. What I'm hearing is get a bed we adults can sleep in comfortably too. That sounds like the double we already have! But I'm just worried about how high it is, and how she might fall, either accidentally or if she's trying to get down to come find us. We do have bed rails but I'm not sure they'd protect against deliberate attempts to abscond.

Unfortunately our cot doesn't become a cot bed. It's Hensvik from Ikea. We didn't think it through at the time!

We've put DS in a single bed and have put his old cot mattress on the floor to catch him if he falls. Although he seems to sleep on that more (only moved swapped on Sunday

yikesanotherbooboo · 12/02/2020 06:58

Don't waste your money on toddler beds generations of children have moved onto normal beds with no problems. They very occasionally fall out even when they are a bit older; I can remember doing it myself. Put something soft on the floor next to it if yo are worried or a pool noodle or similar under the sheet on the open side to encourage rolling back the other way.

Argos bed guards

Eeeeek2 · 12/02/2020 09:18

I went with the kura reversible bed from ikea, low to the ground one way and then in a few years will flip to a low cabin bed so the space underneath can be used to play/store.

Room space -do you have room in there for the double bed plus the toys ie train track/play kitchen/dolls house. At the moment I assume most toys are in living room as supervising needed but in the future their room would also be playroom?

Don't buy a toddler bed unless room is very tight it won't last long
