If my son had chickenpox and I’m pregnant should I be concerned?

I’ve expected him to have chicken pox at some point and he’s got the first signs but it might not be

I had a look at nhs website and it said for pregnant people to stay clear of people with chicken pox

Should I worry?

Have you had it yourself?

NemophilistRebel · 11/02/2020 20:08

Yes I have had it

You should be ok if you’ve had it yourself but possibly worth giving the GP a call - they might be able to check your immunity via a blood test

You should be ok but worth checking with your GP/midwife. Also how pregnant are you, you don’t want your baby to get it as a newborn. Hope your DS is ok and not feeling too poorly.

I'm pregnant and my DD had chickenpox a few weeks ago. I rang the maternity unit and they said as I'd had it, I should be ok. They said to go to the gp if I showed any signs of it.
Give your midwife a ring if you're worried.

Thanks, good point about newborn

It’s only a few spots at the moment on the chest so if it’s just heat rash then il find out soon but will keep an eye again more so when baby arrives

I had this but hadn't had chickenpox ☹️.

DS came down with it about 2 weeks before my due date. I had an immunoglobulin injection but still got my first 'pock' as I went into labour. At this stage it can be quite dangerous.

You don't say how far you are but let them know when you go into labour. Fortunately I had a great midwife who advised the very young doctor not to insist on an epidural for me.

We ended up being in hospital for two weeks after.

I had to consult my GP about this shortly before I was due - apparently this is the most risky time for your unborn baby if you/they catch it. My GP said to let her know immediately if I suspected I'd picked it up.

Contact your GP or midwife to get the best advice for your circumstances.

MrsHardbroom · 11/02/2020 21:04

It's only a potential problem if you haven't had it. If you have, nothing to worry about

Elouera · 11/02/2020 21:05

I hope things are going ok for you and little one?

FYI- there has been a chicken pox vaccine available for year which you could get for your new baby to help prevent- spread to pregnant women, scars, pain, itching, fever, stress, later shingles etc. Hope your little one is coping ok.

My sister gave our Mum Chicken pox when she was in her second trimester with me. I was born with no problem. I've never had Chicken pox (only before birth I suppose) I've been exposed many times looking after kids, and have had shingles, so much have had it and recovered before delivery.

Your midwife can get your immunity checked from your booking bloods. You're probably immune, if you've had it, but if not you can have immunoglobulin. If getting near to delivery then particularly important to get it checked out, as neonatal chickenpox is rather nasty, and would need prompt treatment to avoid problems in baby.
