Any idea what this rash could be? (Pics)

Both of my twins have spots all over their bottoms but no nappy rash, DT1 also has it along his legs where the nappy touches and stomach.

It almost looks like the middle stages of chicken pox but feels rougher, and there have been no blisters. They both had very severe chicken pox last summer, blisters first for both of them and it covered them, this is isolated to the nappy area.

There’s nothing on their hands feet or mouth.

Tesco have just changed their nappies - could this be an allergic reaction? They do both have allergies.

Surely it can’t be chicken pox again when there’s been no blisters first? Have just checked them head to toe and there aren’t any blisters at all.

Oh and they both had a high temperature for a couple of hours - one on Saturday, one yesterday.

Could be HFM, my DD's started on her bum and legs.

SinkGirl · 11/02/2020 16:58

Thanks - could be that then. But when I see pics again they’re more like blisters and these are definite spots. Very strange.

DT1 seems very under the weather suddenly.

Please, for the love of all that is holy, don’t let it be a second bout of chicken pox (DT2 ended up with a very scary secondary infection and it was a month from absolute hell between the two of them).

Would seem incredibly unlikely that they'd both be unlucky enough to get it twice. Poor you - hope they're feeling better soon.

SinkGirl · 11/02/2020 18:13

It really would be, wouldn’t it? Just a bit nervy as I know there’s been chicken pox in their nursery in the last couple of weeks so seeing the rash has made me nervous - possibly mild trauma after the hideousness of last time (they are both autistic and non verbal and one screamed and hit himself in the head for 12 hours straight, then his leg was so badly infected he couldn’t stand or even sit upright for several days, it was truly awful!)

Seems strange that so far it’s confined to their nappy areas, the same week as tesco nappy design changed. But then DT1 especially does seem under the weather so probably a virus.

I’d probably try a different nappy type, just to make sure. It does look a bit like contact dermatitis though that wouldn’t cause a fever unless it got infected...

SinkGirl · 11/02/2020 19:12

Thing is DH and I have both had a bug, so the fever could be a coincidence. We have some of the older packs of nappies so have switched to those to see if it goes away.

And doesn’t chicken pox usually start on the body? It doesn’t look like chicken pox to me.

SinkGirl · 11/02/2020 19:43

No me neither - it does look a bit like how their pox looked in the middle phase, but it would make no sense!

Hopefully changing nappies will fix it!

It is now so much worse and seems to be hand foot and mouth x 2.

Ballsacks.

Poor babies! Have they been to the GP? Have they suggested any soothing cream or similar?

SinkGirl · 13/02/2020 08:48

Haven’t taken them to the GP yet. The staff at nursery yesterday seemed pretty sure that’s what it is, when I picked them up I could see a few appearing on DT1’s hands and feet and a few round his mouth.

But this morning DT2’s rash is going and DT1’s is still mainly legs, arms and nappy area. His hands, feet and mouth seem fine, which seems strange for HF&M! They don’t look like blisters either but then he’s scratched them all so who knows.

They are okay in themselves this morning and it’s not getting any worse. Will see how it goes today and get them into the GP tomorrow or call sooner if things are worsening.

Childhood illnesses are horrible aren’t they? It’s so hard when they can’t talk or understand. They also really don’t demonstrate when they’re in pain or suffering so it’s very hard to know what’s going on with them. Will see how they get on.

We have every type of cream imaginable between DT1 having eczema and stuff left over from chicken pox. Eurax seems to help with the itching.

They look a lot like hfm so could be them. My ds didnt have any on his hands feet or mouth until about 4 days in the second time, and none the first time. The first time he had it they came and went as well. Hope they’re ok whatever it is.

SinkGirl · 13/02/2020 09:13

Thank you, that’s good to know. They both had a high temp a day or two before the rash appeared to it would fit. They seem quite happy today so hopefully it won’t get worse... 😬

DD had one or two spots on her hand and a some round her mouth but that was all, most were on her bum and legs. Apparently it's not unheard of for that to happen. Very annoying though as it can be hard to distinguish from chicken pox!

PapercraftNinja · 13/02/2020 09:18

This looked like my Lo when she had hfm but she was also tested for impetigo. Turned out it was just a viral rash though, she was under the weather with it too.

SinkGirl · 13/02/2020 09:29

Thanks everyone, really appreciate it. I really struggle because the photos of rashes online rarely ever look like what they get, even when the illness is confirmed! I remember being confused when DT1 started with chicken pox as the general progression / stages didn’t seem to fit what he had - then a few days later he got a second bout that was much more typical. By the end they were absolutely covered and it was awful.

Poor DT1 looks so sore but he’s handling it like a champ. Thank god for vaccines so we don’t also have to deal with measles and mumps like my mum did with us! Having measles is one of my earliest memories, and I had chicken pox twice. Horrible. Just the thought of having any of these things as an adult really freaks me out - really hoping I don’t pick up the HF&M!

They definitely look more like blisters he’s scratched now than just spots. Hopefully he’ll get past it quickly like DT2 seems to be!
