Odd question of the day but by how much have your DC's grown in the last year?

DS has several health issues and diagnosis', however my main concern is over his growth/sleep/diet. He has only grown 4cm in the last 2 years. He is almost 13 and wears age 9-10 clothes, he has been wearing the same clothes for 4ish years as he doesnt grow out of them.

So, I am wondering if its normal, or whether I should be concerned. We have a Paed appointment this afternoon.

I dont really have any type of yard stick, as DS1 was always much taller than other kids his age, but his Dad was over 6ft so it made sense.

I think you just need to wait till you see the paed this afternoon lovely.

I have a friend whose 13 year old is much the same as yours. He eats enough, he just hasn't grown much. His mum was very concerned, but the pediatrician just said he's healthy, he's just little. He may have a growth spurt later on. (I believe he had blood tests etc but I can't tell you what as we didn't go into that much detail) They were worried because both of them (parents) are tall - I think mum is 5ft 8 and dad 5ft 11. However grandparents are both short.

He is amongst the smallest in his year, but there are still quite a lot of other boys the same size.

In comparison my son, who is 4 months younger (still 12), is man sized, and has grown over 5 inches in the last 18 months. He is not the biggest in his year, but almost, at 5ft 9 1/2 with size 10 feet. I mentioned grandparents before, because he clearly takes after my dad, who was well built, and 6ft4. DS1 is already bigger than my husband (not quite as tall yet, but bigger build and bigger feet)

I hope you get some reassurance. It may well be linked to is sleep and diet, but he might just have that growth spurt later on x

When I worked in secondary schools it was quite common to have a stray "little boy" who got his growth spurt later and would suddenly catch up with his peers around 14-15 ish. Boys can keep growing into early adulthood so there is plenty of time on his side for hormones to kick in.

DS1 had multiple food allergies as a baby. He started off on the 75th centiles then stagnated when unknowingly introduced to allergens through weaning. He fell further behind his peers while on exclusion diets but caught up with his peers later. He's stabilised as being averagely small. Not tiny and has a couple of peers around the same size. It might be that he takes after me, or he might just be a late developer like his dad who went on to be the first in the family to reach 6ft.

It is worth discussing and HCPs usually check on height/ weight as part of other issues. DS2 grew less when he had a phase of asthmatic night coughs but has caught up back to average since, and the dieticians always checked DS1.

My son had hid growth spurts at 14/15 but my brothers were 16/17 when they went from short to man-sized. Only the paediatrician can tell you whether or not to worry.
My Ds turns 14 this summer and seems to be following his brother's lead. He is not particularly slim but wears age 10-11 boxers and 11-12 school trousers and is about 5 foot 5. He's in y9 and wears the same blazer that he wore in y7. His siblings only had 2 blazers in the whole of secondary school too

DS has always been small for age, only ever had to buy next size clothes/shoes once a year.

Now he's had three sizzles of trousers and had grown 3.25 inches

I hope all goes well with your DS

Crikey have only just noticed I've put 11 rather than 2 on his height marker

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 11/02/2020 13:33

Just wait to see the paed, or Maybe google a growth chart

Hope your boy is ok

It varies hugely, my oldest DS shot up age 12/13, my younger one did not have growth spurt until 14/15

He might just have his growth spurt later on. DS1 shot up between 13 and 14 but his best friend didn't seem to grow much between 12 and 15 then was the second tallest by the time they left school!
