He's really talented and also very into art / cartooning / drawing etc and I'd love to find something suitable - I'm worried anything actually marketed at his age group would be too easy.

My DC like sticking / colouring / junk modelling with the best of them but this boy is really in a completely different league and I'm out of my depth.

budget around £10 - any ideas or where to look at least??

A proper sketch book with good quality paper? Also Homesense/TK Maxx often have sketching pencil sets and sketch books in stock at very reasonable prices.

I would either go with equipment -quality paper pad for painting and drawing or paints, or this is different but good Animation Studio: 1 www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1406350974/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_LvEqEb8VPW7SD?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Caran D'ache watercolour pencils. You can get 12 or so for around 10-15 quid online. Coloured Sharpies. Coloured glitter rollerball pens. Black decent rollerballs. A mix of Hb, b, h pencils with a decent sharpener. My lad was and is the same. You really can trust them with grown up pens and pencils instead of wipe clean felt tips.

The Works sometimes have interesting stuff e.g, www.theworks.co.uk/p/pencils/complete-colouring-and-sketch-studio/5052089011113

HAve a look on hobbycraft website, we got DD2 a mixed media art set a few years ago. She’s also art mad and very good at it.

I'd suggest a decent starter set of acrylic paints, a few brushes and an acrylic pad (though hardboard or canvas board would also be suitable) though this will be a bit more than £10. I've made some suggestions of good quality but basic materials below.

Then courage your son to explore YouTube to see how these can be used. Also suggest he draws or paint from observation (either real life or photographs) as well as imagination.

My artist friend gave DD some Posca pens. They’re not cheap but you should be able to get a small set for near a tenner. They’re really good quality and can draw on black paper, laminate etc. There’s loads of examples on Pinterest - includes lots of cartoon/animation if you haven’t seen them before.
Whatever you go for, if he’s really talented and keen I’d chose quality over quantity.

FusionChefGeoff · 11/02/2020 11:09

Wow that's amazing thanks everyone. My DS has other talents - this is one of his friends - so I'll have a good look at all that and see what works best prob as a stand alone gift as not sure what he has already if that makes sense.
