Any police officers around? Vehicle stops.

Does anyone know if the police usually carefully check the licence of someone they find driving without insurance. Would they notice if they person was driving a manual car with an automatic licence?

When checking the licence over the radio, the officer will be told if it’s automatic only by the Control room. Officer should check gears. So yes, in short.

Thank you. Would they definitely check the licence if they stopped someone for driving without insurance. Someone I know who has driven manual cars for years using an automatic licence has been convicted of driving without insurance. I can't work out how they haven't picked up on the licence, they were definitely driving a manual car.

They would be told by the control room which type of licence the driver had. The officer would need to visually check. That’s the way of it in Hertfordshire, anyway.

If you have concerns, you can anonymously report the driver.

It's probably one of those things that should be checked, but might be missed if the police officer is not 100% thorough. Similarly it says on your driving licence if you should be using vision correction for driving, but unless they check your eyesight, they won't know if you are wearing contact lenses, or are just not wearing your glasses.

But if someone has been caught driving without insurance, that's a serious offence so they should get quite a decent punishment (fine and points) but the problem with that is that their insurance will then go up a lot, making it more likely that they will continue to drive illegally - you often read about people who have been caught many times for driving without insurance.

No insurance and no licence to drive the type of vehicle they're driving. It would be like me buying a Harley Davidson tomorrow and driving out of the shop with it. (Sorry, it's a little dream of mine).
