Will it still be more expensive than a similar shop at asda or aldi?

About 30% more than Aldi.

Woeisme99 · 10/02/2020 22:11

Depends what you buy. They have some good offers on usually, but if you buy value products usually then it will be more expensive.
Absolutely worth every penny though if you can afford it.

Pipandmum · 10/02/2020 22:12

It will definitely be more e pensive. But theres lots of food at Waitrose you cant get at other stores.

Yes. But if you chose carefully you'll get some really nice things that wouldn't be available at Aldi. I alternate shopping between the two and the price difference is phenomenal but then so is the quality. There are some really good ice creams for example. If you go in to a shop at the right time they do pretty good yellow sticker offers too, stack your discounts but only buy the stuff you couldn't get at Aldi.

millymae · 10/02/2020 22:20

Probably but as a one off shop it will make a change. Depending on the size of the store you will find more choice In certain ranges and their own products are good.
Have you got a Waitrose card?. If you haven’t sign up for one on line before you go as you can get a free newspaper and a free coffee if you take your own cup. In my local store they do 20% off fish on a Friday for cardholders too.

Bonkersblond · 10/02/2020 22:20

So I get these vouchers, top tip, if you spend £56, get your free paper but this will have a value £2 approx when you scan it, also scan your free coffee, value approx £2, so bill total is now £60, your final bill will be £44, as the charge for coffee and paper will be removed along with your voucher!

Bonkersblond · 10/02/2020 22:21

The above needs a My Waitrose Card.

ssd · 10/02/2020 23:09

Also I've got staff discount of 15% as ds works pt in another waitrose, wonder if u could use that too?
Didn't know about the newspaper and coffee, thanks for letting me know.

For the coffee you need your own reusable cup. They don't provide cups. Coffee is only free if you buy something. Free newspaper is everyday with a £10 spend. With your voucher at the moment they have good deals on cleaning/ hygiene products. Waitrose is no more expensive than Sainsbury's or Tesco on basic items. I shop there all the time as it's my local. If you are into wine they have some good wines so maybe treat yourself on that voucher. Watch for the 25% of wine weekend if your voucher date allows.

BarbaraofSeville · 11/02/2020 04:31

It will be more expensive unless you shop very carefully. Some things are similar in price, but some things are way more expensive - eg fruit and veg, meat, fish, cheese.

Whether or not the things are better quality/nicer is up for debate, only you can decide whether it's worth it to you. I've used these vouchers only to find that buying a few more expensive things has wiped out the savings, making the exercise pointless. But sometimes you can take advantage of some good offers and try some new things, and get a bit of a discount on the way.

Definitely take advantage of the free coffee and paper if you have a MyWaitrose card, and thanks for the tip about the free things counting towards the spend bonkers I didn't know that.

I threw my last set of vouchers away because I used to get £8 off £40 but the latest ones were £10 off £60 but I did use them in the past to build up a nice gin collection, but I've put myself on a bit of a shopping ban on this front this year, as I have quite a lot in stock. I'd buy a couple of bottles of nicer gin on offer and a few other bits to make it to £40, sometimes getting one of the lovely but expensive sushi sets from the fresh counter, arguing that it was 'free' because of the voucher.

ssd · 11/02/2020 09:18

I'll go today and see how it goes. I expect to walk away with a couple of bags for my money instead of the trolley load I get in aldi.
But the voucher makes me want to try it.

Another thing, how do I use the little machine that adds it up as you go?

I sometimes use these if I have the spare cash to stock up and fill the freezer with special offers. For a weekly shop it's still more expensive for me. They keep sending me the £8 off £40 ones when I want the £6 off £30 ones though.

dontgobaconmyheart · 11/02/2020 09:29

Probably not much of a 'saving'. I get these all the time and never bother. The spend amount seems high, it's (to my mind) like doing a 50 quid shop, and getting say... 4 items chucked in for free. I'd rather just shop elsewhere and treat myself to the £12 worth of treats in waitrose.

It's my nearest supermarket so I pop in often and I do think it's pricey, nothing I've bought is uniquely delicious or fantastic in any spectacular way tbh but they do some nice bits you can't get elsewhere..

Sparklingbrook · 11/02/2020 09:29

If you want to use Self Scan you have to have a MyWaitrose card. You scan it to release the handset.

ssd · 11/02/2020 13:44

Thanks everyone, I agree with the posts here. I went earlier, God, what a nice store, amazing selection, but the prices Shock
I did get a fair amount and used the 12 off 60 voucher also used ds's staff discount card, which probably brought it down to something more realistic.
But I then went into B&m and of course seen so much at half the price.
I don't think I'll use it again.
Nice to wander round though and if I ever win the lottery I'll be there every week Grin

I think they do own brand items that are better than other supermarkets’ own brand items, but these items are more expensive.

I would choose the things that you wouldnt get in the same way elsewhere. Like their pistachio ice cream and other lovely ice creams, the fish counter is 20% off on Fridays and they give free herbs and butter and seal these with the fish in foil so you just put it in the oven, the fresh coconut and lemongrass noodles are gorgeous, their own brand welsh cakes too, own brand white chocolate and strawberry meringues, and in my Waitrose the fruit and veg are all way better quality than any of the other aupermarketa but a lot more expensive.

Lamentations · 11/02/2020 14:23

When I get these I stock up on tea, coffee, cereal, cleaning stuff and toiletries but still only if they're on offer. Otherwise I suspect it's not much of a saving. I avert my eyes to all the other lovely things within unless I'm feeling flush.

fussychica · 11/02/2020 15:37

Blimey everyone is getting better vouchers than me.
I used to get £8 off £40 but the latest lot are just £4 off £40, not impressed. Think I'll stop using my card for a while and see if I get better vouchers. It's my local supermarket so I shop there often but never do a full shop I just mix it with other stores. I mainly buy stuff on offer as their offers can be excellent. Lots of GinGrin

WellTidy · 11/02/2020 15:40

I get no vouchers whatsoever. It is because I am such a regular shopper I think, I am relied on as being a good thing. A friends gets lots of spend £40 get £8 off vouchers and she only ever shops at Waitrose when she gets them. And then she gets more.

ssd · 11/02/2020 17:41

Yes the vouchers are definitely to reel us in. I don't drink so can't load up there. I do need new saucepans but the basic one I liked was £28 so may not be getting that..
