Does hormones really affect your thinking on baby names?

Names I ran past DH today were

  • Vincent
  • Jacqueline
  • Lavender

He was quite emphatic about the fact that it was a no. I really like them all though!

Grin I am smiling at your question, not the names!

I don't think hormones affect it, but I do think it's really easy to go off on one when a baby isn't there yet, or when you've got this tiny amazing stranger and you're still working out which way is up.

But do think how the name might sound on something other than a cute baby. I remember teaching some poor lass who was applying for a PhD, and she told me plaintively 'my name sounds like a stripper name'. I couldn't pretend I didn't know what she meant.

Ask your DP why he doesn't like those names.

I mean gosh, those are crazy names.

Lavender will always be most known for a toilet scent.

Jacqueline is for no one younger than 50.

Vincent- can’t get passed Van Gogh there.

There are so many lovely names out there.

OTOH, though, I know of a few small Lavenders (Harry Potter related!), and I'd think Vincent is part of the trend for rather old-fashioned names. I know of lots of Alfies, Reggies, etc. Vincent is the same generation, isn't it?

Far be it from me to say I'd fancy those names myself, but it's not like the OP is proposing to call her child Jezebel Pumpkin Firecracker-Knickers. I think she'll be ok.

Not hormones here! I'm pregnant and have names like Isobel and Violet on my list, whereas DW who is definitely not pregnant is offering up gems like Myrtle, Clover, Manuka.

Yes, definitely. I wanted to call DC1 Audey at one point (like Audrey without the R). It came to me in a dream Hmm. Thankfully that disappeared when he was actually born and he has a much more sensible name.

I also went through a spell of wanting to call DC2 Sunflower Confused. My children all have sensible traditional names fwiw so Sunflower just wouldn’t have fit in any way, shape or form!
