Amazed at how fast the DC have learned to ski

We're on our first ski holiday. All of us are complete newbies and yesterday was our first day of skiing. The DC went to ski school in both the morning and the afternoon and DH and I had private tuition in the morning. After ski school finished, the DC convinced us to take them on the nursery slopes for an hour so that they could practice.

They are incredible! It is something to watch your 6 and 8 year old fly down a slope. It is the nursery slope, but it's still got decent height and incline.

They'll have had 20 hours of ski school by the time we leave, and they're already this confident after 4 hours!

That sounds great, would you say they're the right ages for it? Which resort are you in?

I first went at 15 and fell in love with skiing. It's amazing how quickly children can pick up a new skill and it's something you can all do as a family

Glad you're having fun. What resort are you at?

We started when ours were 3 and 5. Felt really bad for the 3 year old. He hated it. Felt terrible because we were all doing it because skiing is my favourite thing ever.

Last year though they were 6 and 8 and both love it. The 8 year old had me taking him down black runs Shock I was quite enjoying having an excuse to pootle round blue runs until then.

I'm dreading the point where his ability and confidence are much higher than his risk assessment capabilities.

We're in Rauris in Austria and are using Adventure Rauris ski school. Phenomenal teachers. DH and I were on the drag lift on the nursery slope this morning and our DC were on the opposite side. We saw a child in the group slip from the lift. It was so reassuring to see how swiftly and calmly the instructors dealt with it.

We've come here on a recommendation from DHs colleague, who started bringing his children here at a similar age, and they've been coming for about 15 years now. It's family and beginner friendly. With a few blacks and reds for more confident skiers. DH and I have been on the nursery slopes for two days but our instructor tells us we're going up the mountain tomorrow. The DCs instructor has said the same to me, so we'll all be taking on our first blues.

At 6 and 8, they seem to be the perfect ages for it. They're used to following instruction and working as a group after being at school for a couple of years, and are old enough to withstand the endurance of 4 hours of lessons.
