Extremely worried about driving today!

We are due to drive from Scotland to Dorset today, as have a holiday cottage booked at Lulworth Cove. I don't think we could have a worse day to make an already long journey. I'm terrified. Him indoors insists it will all be fine. Madness?

I don't know. DH has left for work early in the hope of avoiding the lorries. I don't know if they get banned from the roads in high winds? (If not, they should!)

I was daft enough to go out in it yesterday and it was one of the most stupid things I've done. However it's calmed down quite a lot here, still gusty but nothing like yesterday. There is a lot of debris on the road though.

I drove M6 M40 from Lancashire to London last night and it was perfectly fine. Not a single delay or accident. It wasn’t at all as bad as being reported. I’ve had far worse journeys weather wise.

MaidenMotherCrone · 10/02/2020 07:52

@DeludedMumofPFB no they don't get banned from the roads although bridges are often closed to high sided vehicles.

Your husband leaving early to avoid trucks was rather pointless as haulage runs all the time. My DH starts work at 4.30am in his truck Hmm.

Dh drove down from Manchester to London yesterday and said it was fine, pack supplies in case of any delays and have a good holiday.

I had a similar thread running at the weekend as we had a journey to make yesterday that I was worried about. Granted it wasn't as far as yours, but we are in the SW and the weather was pretty hairy. It was fine, windy and driving rain across the moor, but not nearly as bad as my anxiety expected it to be. Just take your time, stop regularly and listen to the travel news.

As the partner of a hgv driver I would love them to be banned from the roads in bad weather but it’s not going to happen and people would soon complain about the empty shops if it did!

I have driven this morning and it was fine. Local roads had a fair bit of debris but the motorway was ok, just be sensible and leave a bigger gap than normal and only go out to overtake the lorries when you know it’s clear to get passed them rather than being alongside them too long.

It has calmed down a lot today.

DeludedMumofPFB · 10/02/2020 08:00

Maybe it's just a fluke of where we live Maiden as he says that if he leaves early there's not much traffic around and he rarely sees lorries. He doesn't leave any more between 615-7, after then traffic is ok again but then there are lorries on the road.

I drove from south east to Devon yesterday. We stopped in Lyme Regis to look at the sea and walk the dog. Very wild and beautiful.
Driving was a bit harder than a nice spring day but perfectly manageable.
Wetness was dealt with by windscreen wipers.
A bit slower than usual to ensure control when a sudden gust caused buffeting where there were gaps in shelter from hedges etc.
Fog lights when really squally over high ground.
Lots of coffee stops as it was a bit harder work than usual.

I took the dog out an hour ago for a pee. It’s definitely better this morning.

It hasn't been too bad so far, though torrential rain now.. Got about another 150 miles to go. Ironically it's snowing really heavily where we actually live.
