Electric burning smell. Anyone awake?

I've not slept v well but woken up to an awful smell. It's from spare room. I've turned off anything electric in there but there is no isolation switch. I'm shitting myself there's going to be a fire.

I need to ring electrician first thing but I'm suppose to be at work by 9.15.

Am I safe to go back to sleep? Not sure I can though. I've opened the windows to get rid of the smell.

Should I switch all the electrics off?

Wow - glad it’s ok. Lessons for us all - make sure you know how to switch everything off, have emergency numbers to hand and get smoke/gas (?) detectors.

Oh heck , but it's better feel a bit of a fool and be safe than risk a fire .

Well we bought a new flat and we’re going on holiday. We switched off all the electric switches and went off for 2 weeks.

When we got back the fridge freezer wasn’t working. Got the electrician out. He hummed and hawed- the. Walked over to the other end of the huge kitchen and flicked a switch (turns out it wasn’t the waste disposal unit switch) and the fridge started to work.

He was remarkably humourless about it (considering it was the easiest £60 he ever made for five bloody minutes).

Late back to the thread, but you're not an idiot. Better safe than sorry and glad you got it sorted.

Awh thanks everyone for making me feel better Flowers

.. Next question.. Any ideas on the best way to get a horrible smell out of the house?! 😩🤣 Have scrubbed floor, opened windows and left cut up onions to absorb smell in the stink room!

Windows open and get some of those oil diffusers. It will take a couple of days though if it’s a chemically smell.

A few bowls of baking soda dotted round the room will help absorb the smell. It won't happen immediately but it will help get rid.

Wash everything down as best you can and air the room as much as possible.

Any fragrances products will just mix with the smell and might make things worse. Keep the door to that room closed too.

The smell is horrific still. Been trying to open window as much as poss but the winds are still too bad. Meantime I've been reading up and have put kitty litter down.

I did bicarb yesterday but didn't touch it.

I'm in fear of having to strip the floor out at the moment. 😭😭

Just hoping it will die down but the scarf I had in there reeks of it and my coat. It was a tiny amount that leaked too.

It does take days. DS attempted to cook something when I was out and the smell was terrible. It took about 3 days to get rid of the melted plastic smell.

(I may add that DS is pushing 16 and not a small child left alone).
