Genuine question about renting a house

I know buying is not for everyone, or possible for many, but when you rent, what happens when you retire? How do you cover your costs?

Is it different in local authority housing compared to private rental?

Thank you.

You would be entitled to housing benefit I guess?

WhoWants2Know · 09/02/2020 19:53

You still have to cover all the same costs when you retire, so I suppose you can rely on savings and your pension if you are able to make ends meet. Housing benefit may help if you're entitled.

Or, increasingly, I suspect, you'll find that people aren't ever really able to retire.

bunnyrabbit93 · 09/02/2020 19:54

I presume Housing benefit will cover it but only to a local authority set amount

I will work until I die, not that I find retirement terribly appealing anyway. My pension, even if I were mortgage free, is not going to keep me entertained for very long, so I think I would rather work than sit home alone.

You pay your rent out of your pension.
Or if you receive limited income qualify for HB.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 09/02/2020 20:00

You would use your pension to pay your rent. If you don't have a private pension then you would have a very basic retirement on benefits.

Wifeofbikerviking · 09/02/2020 20:03

The way state pensions are looking prising looks like a good retirement option. Free meals, recreational activities, healthcare, socialising. (I'm obviously joking, but slightly sad still)

You would get some help with housing benefits, so part of your pension would go to thr rent and the rest topped up. In private rent it is capped. For social housing it's reduced for every spare room you have.

It would be a very frugal retirement.
