How long did you have to wait for your council / HA property?

Hi,

I just wondered how long you had to wait for your council property? I may be applying to my local council soon and have never applied before, always lived with either family friends or with a partner. I have house shared privately. I know things are dire at the moment and want to get an idea as to whether this option will be realistic or not. For reference I will be single with no children.

Thanks

I waited 7 years. But it was so worth it. I’m still here and having security is wonderful. A luxury for people with no money.

Although tbh if you don’t have children you won’t be high priority.

It's really dependent on area ,I waited about six months but I don't live in the South East and this was about five years ago ,I guess how long is a piece of string ?

could be ten years or more

you won't be a priority unless theres disability?

You would be better off asking your council what the average waiting times are .

I was on the list about 3 months, I’m in Yorkshire and moved in 3 years ago.

I waited a couple of months 17 years ago. I transferred as a priority 18 months later because they were demolishing the flats so moved into a 2 bed house within a week of applying. When we had our 2nd child we put in for another transfer to a 3 bed house and got that within a fortnight too. That was 7 years ago.

Depending on your area . You will be encouraged to privately rent and the area I live the council will pay deposit and month up front as they are so short of council properties.
Sometimes there are hard to let properties in other areas you may be able to consider.

I have known people to wait 3 weeks, 3 months, 3 years or 3 decades (yes genuinely know somebody who waited nearly 30 years, was a single Childless man with no disability in a desirable are). It depends so much on area and priority need. The people I have known to be given one fast it's in areas where there's not such a shortage AND they've had a combination of disability/children/other needs that means that they were priorities. In my area even having kids/disabilities/other needs/being homeless etc. Does not help all that much can still be years. But an hours drive away my friends have been housed in a few months with less need. It is such a post code lottery, but not all of us can move away from those we care for/who care for us/due to health care/education/work etc.

I went on the list when j was pregnant with DS and was told in our local area wait is anything from 4 months- 10 years depending on priority. I got booted off the list after 3 months as they changed their rules Hmm meaning I no longer was entitled to anything.
You won't be high priority though unfortunately

In this area (East London/Essex) single with no children normally means between 7 and 10 years.

mumofone2818 · 09/02/2020 21:40

I waited 3 months but thats in Glasgow so really depends where you are applying! x

I got a 3 bedroom house for myself and 1 DS within 2 weeks, as I chose an unpopular village in our area (County Durham), where it is easy to get a social housing property.

Very much dependent on your area.

Yellredder · 10/02/2020 20:53

A matter of weeks. I live in a very rural area and it's not that popular with social housing tenants due to poor bus links etc.
