... what do you do, why do you love it and what, in your opinion, is the single most important quality you must have to enjoy this work?

MotherHeggy I don't need to work from a financial point of view. But I need to work because I think my job keeps me sane and engaged with the world and helps people. Why would I give that up?

Tiggles I remember going to a wedding and, on our table, were people with lots of 'exciting' jetsetty jobs and one woman vicar. People couldn't leave her alone, they were all absolutely fascinated and there was literally a queue for questions!

SunshineAvenue · 14/02/2020 08:33

northendgal oh dear I think you've just described my perfect job! Better watch your back (joke!).

I'm guessing that was a hobby that turned into a living for you?

I'd be interested to know how many of you that have said you love your job would carry on doing it if you didn't need to work. Say you won a huge amount on the lottery, enough to live comfortably for the rest of your life, would you carry on doing your job

I could be a sahm now if I wanted to be but the truth is I prefer it to chil care. If I won the lottery I'd probably go part time and continue having the kids in full time child care but taking them out for days as when (which I currently do with annual leave). I find my job really worthwhile and rewarding so unless I won enough money to start up a charity, I'd keep at it.

Sorry Daet I can see youstupidboy has already answered but yes, look under staff vacancies on your local force's website. I note though different forces do things differently. My assessment was much more in depth than my friend's who does the same job in a neighbouring force. And his training period was shorter. Inbox me if you want any more info :)

Bitchbadgerplease · 14/02/2020 09:14

motherheggy I definitely would. I couldn't not make a mark on the world. I think the only thing I'd do if money didn't matter would be tell them I was no longer doing the early shift! Grin I'm no good at mornings.

JillAmanda · 14/02/2020 09:17

@VetOnCall - genuinely interested why vets always try so hard to flog the dreadful Hills stuff if they’re NOT in its “thrall”?

NorthEndGal · 14/02/2020 13:12

@SunshineAvenue sort of! I became pretty sick and had to stop working. As I got a bit better, I began spending more time beachcombing.
Eventually I had brought home so much sea debris that dh said start doing something with it, or stop bringing it home.
It grew from there, and to be upfront, I couldn't live as well as I do on just what I earn. Dh is a higher earner and has supported the family for the last decade or more.
Some of what i found yesterday , and a pic I just did

I'm an HCA on a surgical ward with some medical outliers.
Part time for health reasons.

I like my colleagues in my team plus I enjoy working with the patients as most of them are pleasant.

the job can give me a sense of achievement for example when I help someone disabled to walk a few steps post surgery or when a quiet dementia patient suddenly decides to talk to me.

There are times I get fed up & stressed but on the whole I enjoy my job.

hernamewasrio · 15/02/2020 08:02

I was just telling my husband that I have never laughed so much as I do now at work! I have fabulous colleagues and great students. Culture is everything and I'd never give up academia again to return to the dull corporate world for money.

NoSoundToday · 15/02/2020 08:13

I'm a nursery nurse on a Neonatal Unit, I've been there 12 years and love it.
Every day is different, some days all i do is change nappies, cuddle and bottle feed babies, other days I'm looking after a really sick baby on cpap and supporting anxious parents.
I work with a great team and can't imagine doing anything else.

@BoogleMcGroogle
(MotherHeggy here but name changed)
I was actually replying to the question as to whether I'd leave work or stay if I came into a life changing amount of money- my reply was that I'd definitely stay in work as I enjoy my job.

I’m a housekeeper on a country estate. I look after the entire house ( it is enormous ) and all the animals that are on the estate as well. I love love love my job. I love the family I work for and they are wonderful to me.

JillAmanda · 16/02/2020 13:12

Ooh @Drivemybluecar I’d love to hear more about your job!

Drivemybluecar · 16/02/2020 14:23

Ha. It’s not that exciting. My first job of the day is to walk the six dogs round the estate in the woods etc. Love that! not so much when It is like the weather is now. I can’t have dogs at my house so it’s nice to have them. i don’t deal with the sheep Shock though. Not my thing Grin
I deal with the entire house ( the stairs are no joke ) cleaners , gardeners etc.
I help out with the kids as well which is lovely when they are off on school holidays. They have shoots on the entire estate lots as well. I’m not a believer in that but I have to deal with that when it happens. I also deal with mundane things like putting away the shopping when it comes Grin

I’m self employed but I get paid for holidays and bank holidays and I house sit when they are away which is a lot.

I do everything. Basically run the house. It’s a huge house. With three floors. But it is really old. There is a front and a back like they have in Downton Abbey for the servants. Not that it is used like that anymore. But it still got all the old features in it. It is a cool job.

Yes, I would.

I love working with animals and the fact that I'm self-employed means I can pick and choose my days and hours. If I walk three dogs twice a day, I can earn sixty quid and I'm only out of the house a couple of hours.

Thosethatcan · 16/02/2020 14:54

Head of maths. Love it. Every minute of every day counts. The students are the best thing about the job. My team are great, always supportive and incredibly hard working. The management are embarrassingly bad, but I'm good enough at what I do to cushion that for my staff and students. Oh and I get to do maths every day, get in!

C0tt0nReelz · 16/02/2020 15:08

TA( ex teacher). I’m valued, work with lovely people, good at my job, it’s varied with zero stress.

C0tt0nReelz · 16/02/2020 15:09

I’d carry on even with a lottery win but might drop a day from full time.

LadyDaisyChain · 16/02/2020 15:21

@alphasox sounds great, how did you get where you are?

Starryskiesinthesky · 16/02/2020 15:23

Clinical Psychologist in forensic service. Love the variety, team work and making a difference.

Drivemybluecar · 16/02/2020 15:41

I don’t think I would stay in my job if I won the lottery. But I would have to start up something as I’m not one for sitting down

alphasox · 16/02/2020 21:41

@LadyDaisyChain
I got into charity work entry level as a researcher out of uni, worked my way up and through a few different charities to manage a team working on big projects and then when I was on mat leave got made redundant and at the same time saw my now job advertised in a trade journal.
