Weighted blanket for baby.

Has anyone bought a weighted blanket to help baby sleep? If so which one?

Our 7 month old wakes regularly in her cot, she just wakes for reassurance then goes back to sleep again, but it's getting a bit much. Coslept with her last night and she did 7 hours without a peep, woke when partner came home then back off for another 3 (although I put her in her cot as partner was in the bed).

The night before (I was in work the following day) she woke and wouldn't settle so partner took her and put her in pram where she slept for 6 hours without waking. She was supervised as we are aware pram sleeping is considered dangerous.

So I'm thinking the cot is too big and scary. So was thinking of a weighted blanket. But they are expensive so wanted other people's views first, please.

Wouldn’t use one on a baby at all. They need to be able to get out from under them and a 7 month old would struggle (I think). Dont think- but haven’t checked- they recommend them either for children that young. Could be wrong though so worth checking this.
In your circumstances I’d try a gro bag. Used all through with mine and nephews& nieces.

BeautifulBirds · 09/02/2020 10:28

I have the grow bags and they are brilliant but she just wakes up, sometimes every hour.

I'll check the age restriction for babies, I hadn't thought of that before. Thanks.

Pretty sure you are told to never use a weighted blanket for a baby. If I’m honest, to me it sounds stupid to even consider it. Can you move her into a next to me or something smaller than the cot?

There not recommended for children under the age of one and that's as a minimum because they need to be able to pull it down if it rides up too high and wiggle out form under it if needed. They are surprisingly heavy, 10% of body weight, DS has one and it weighs nine pounds which doesn't sound a lot until you try lifting it up.

BeautifulBirds · 09/02/2020 11:16

Yeah, looked at the age restriction and it is not advised due to the significant risk of SIDS. I hadn't considered it as there are weighted blankets aimed at babies.

I was hoping to move her into her own room soon but it's clear she wants to be near me so may have to consider a next to me, not sure if she will be too big though. (is it a step backwards when aiming for independent sleep or a step in the right direction cos everyone gets sleep)

Argh these babies!! 🙈

One thing I’ve learnt is babies are very different. My DD1 was in with me until 2.5 yo whereas my DD2 wanted to be in her own room at 7 months! It may feel like going backwards but it’s best to do whatever gives you the most sleep!

A next to me might actually be too small and she may be able to pull herself up soon. Can you fit her cot in your room? Or maybe get a smaller cot to go in there in the interim?

HardAsSnails · 09/02/2020 11:44

This is crazy, proper advice for weighted blankets is that they should not be used all night due to risk of overheating (and the body acclimatises to the weight so why risk it) and suffocation. I'm horrified that these are being marketed for babies.

BeautifulBirds · 09/02/2020 12:16

She is in with us atm. The cot is about 2 foot away.

I had her in a moses basket until 5 months cos she wouldn't sleep in the cot very well.

Oh how awful that weighted blankets are being marketed for babies....absolutely not a good idea.

Whatever the age, they should not be used for longer than 20-30minutes. And the child/adult should not be so compromised/young/immobile that they are unable to move from underneath if they feel uncomfortable.

Have you recently gone back to work? or is there any other reason that she might feel she needs the extra reassurance that you are nearby?

BeautifulBirds · 09/02/2020 12:49

She used to sleep really well until we moved house.

Used to fall asleep on her own in the evening and sleep 4 hours plus.

I kept her in her moses basket until 5 months as when I tried to put her in her cot she would fuss and become upset.

I've decorated her room, just waiting for carpet, as I thought it was us disturbing her. However, last night with just me and her cosleeping proved to me she can sleep 7 hours without waking.

I'm back at work in April and want her to be as settled as possible. She is EBF and so far we've had minimal luck bottle feeds too.

She is such a happy little thing and a pleasure to be around. I just want her to be rested and settled when I have to leave her.

The weighted blanket came up during some Internet research so I thought I'd scope it out. But after the (quite rightly) thoughts on here I will steer clear!

Maybe she’s happiest Co sleeping? My first was. Second hates being in bed with me Hmm

BeautifulBirds · 09/02/2020 13:44

I dont mind cosleeping when it's just me and her but when there are three of us in the bed I don't sleep well as I worry.

There's a new story about that 10month old baby dying in a nursery because they had put a weighted blanket on him.

I considered the same thing until I read that story.

TheNoiseHurts · 09/02/2020 13:58

I just googled it to show you and there's bloody loads of them that have died that way .

Horrible.

I feel you OP my baby doesn't sleep at all.

BeautifulBirds · 09/02/2020 13:59

It's hard @thenoisehurts.

I cope quite well with it. I just want her to be rested. She isn't a difficult baby, far from it, so it can't be doing that much harm.

I got a next to me crib from lidl, its bigger than a moses basket and smaller than a cot, will last us until shes ready for her own room

DreamingofItaly · 09/02/2020 14:07

Have you tried putting something that smells of you in the cot with her? DS wouldn't settle easily when we did the Moses basket to cot move so I put one of his snuggle toys in the bed with me for a week then put it next to him in his cot he's slept a lot better since that. I'd seen stories of babies settling with mum's t-shirt which made me think but didn't want to do it with something that had a suffocation risk!

BeautifulBirds · 09/02/2020 14:18

Yes, tried that. Had a muslin that hadnt been washed for a couple of days that had breast milk on. She uses it to rub her eyes but still cries.
