I want to repaint my kitchen doors but they're an ugly traditional design? What colour should I go for?

Kitchen has these doors. I hate them. They're so ugly traditional. Can't afford new kitchen but want to freshen it up with new flooring, tiles, worktop etc. What colour will suit it? I like the current fashion of the dark blue but feel it won't go with this design!

Help me please!

Could you order new doors for the cupboards?

MiniTheMinx · 09/02/2020 09:35

I looked at the picture and immediately thought dark blue. But I see you think it won't suit them.

PlanDeRaccordement · 09/02/2020 09:35

First, new tiles and worktop would surely cost a lot more than new cabinet doors? Do you know you can just replace the doors of the cabinets? You do not have to replace the entire cabinet.

As for colour, it would depend on what colour tiles and worktop you are going for. Also how much natural light does your kitchen get? How big is it? Etc.

Farrow and ball pigeon would look lovely with a brushed gold handle. It's a soft green colour which you could colour match. The dark colours are very on trend but probably will date quickly and also can make the space seem very small. Or you could go neutral mainly and then have one section in a dark colour or an island.

A local company who does new doors quoted 3k! Tiles and worktops will be a few hundred pounds.

Kitchen is north facing. Really dark.

I thought they were going to be cathedral doors but these are fine and very neutral for painting. I wouldn't worry about fashion. Pick something you like. I immediately thought grey.

They would look fab in a dark colour...

Those shaker doors look fab in dark colours but I'm not sure it looks good in mine. It's too traditional.

The new doors just need screwing on to the hinges.

You can do that. Just get some doors off the shelf.

PureedSocksAndPants · 09/02/2020 09:51

Very pale duck egg blue.

trulyconfuseddotcom · 09/02/2020 09:54

Mine were white and we had them resprayed F&B Downpipe which is a dark grey - I love them! I think dark blue could look good (with light coloured tiles/flooring/some open shelving) but if you're concerned about them being too dark then maybe mix blue with white like this? Lighting and new handles can also make a big difference - lighting esp important in a north facing room. We put led strip lighting on top of the wall cabinets as well as underneath them, really transformed the feel and was relatively inexpensive.

@PureedSocksAndPants Oooo yes, that would look lovely

PlanDeRaccordement · 09/02/2020 09:59

I agree with iamnow. Don’t pay someone to switch out your doors. It’s easy to do it yourself.

Ok, dark and northfacing kitchen. I would not paint the cabinets a dark colour then. It will make the kitchen feel like a cave. I would go for high gloss white cabinets and dark work top, with white subway tiles.

Dark blue would be absolutely fine on those doors.

Or sage/olive green would work too.

Ninkanink · 09/02/2020 10:02

Actually dark colours will often open up a space and make it feel bigger, rather than making it small.

YappityYapYap · 09/02/2020 10:06

I would go for a light grey or olive green then a one white, one light grey/olive green tile affect to match then a nice laminated wood effect work top

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 09/02/2020 10:06

We have dark blue gloss top cupboards and grey matte base cupboards. Love them. Instead of tiles, what about a splash back and upstand. Much easier to clean than tiles.

PlanDeRaccordement · 09/02/2020 10:07

Yes if used as an accent. But not if it dominates a room. Cabinets provide the dominate colour in a kitchen.

It depends how big the OPs kitchen is and how much light it has whether dark cabinets would work or not because they will make the kitchen appear smaller. In large kitchens this is good because it adds a cosy, home feeling instead of industrial commercial kitchen feeling. But if the kitchen is not very large, and is dark, dark cabinetry will make an already small and dark space even smaller and darker.

PlanDeRaccordement · 09/02/2020 10:09

Whatever colour scheme you go with OP and if you do paint the doors instead of replacing them, make sure you buy waterproof exterior grade paint otherwise you will not be able to wash the cabinets and even water dropping from cleaning the countertop will make the paint streaky or wear away too fast.

Truly confused dot com.
I’ve been wanting to paint my doors, who did you get to spray the cupboards and have they chipped?

Fozzleyplum · 09/02/2020 10:12

We did our rather tired looking oak kitchen with F&B Mizzle, which is a lighter version of the Pigeon suggested by a pp. It's really brightened it up.

Scabetty · 09/02/2020 10:19

My mother has just painted similar doors in a dark grey/blue and changed the handles. Looks really good 😁

trulyconfuseddotcom · 09/02/2020 10:25

@dogswalks2
We're up in Scotland so prob too far for you? They've not chipped and they seem fairly resistant to grease, muck etc. We are careful what we use for cleaning them - nothing abrasive, but we haven't been overly fussy with them either. I think the company uses something like car paint so quite robust. Here's some pics, before and in progress. Was a lot cheaper than getting a new kitchen and felt more environmentally friendly too.

You can buy paint for kitchen cupboard doors. I have some sitting in the corner waiting to be used. You won't get lots of colour choices though. Small sponge rollers to apply it. I have done it before, seem to keep moving to houses with kitchens that are the wrong colour. I was going to paint them and replace the doors later if we don't move.
