Would you travel tomorrow?

I'm due to travel from North West England to the South West tomorrow. Have just been reading about Storm Ciara and all the weather warnings.

If you were me, would you travel? I was planning on leaving so that I would do all of the drive in the light, going steady and stopping as often as necessary but now doubting whether I should travel at all!

I'm pretty relaxed about things in general but I would be asking myself whether it was really necessary to travel tomorrow. Could you put it off?
I mean you could end up with long delays.

Wolfiefan · 08/02/2020 21:33

I wouldn’t but I drive a tall van! Depends on what you’re driving and your level of experience and confidence. Do you have places you can stop on the way? Does it have to be tomorrow?

I've got a SUV which has a 4 x 4 button (but not sure that will help in the wind!).

Can delay but I'd rather not.

If it was just me I'd go and go slow but have the baby with me so my view of risk is a little different. He's a good traveller though.

If you can put it off then I would. You never know, you might end up stuck somewhere for hours.

Ylvamoon · 08/02/2020 21:42

We have a 4 hour round trip tomorrow. Cancelling isn't an option. I think it will be ok if you are a very experienced driver and know your limitations.

I had a bad weather experience once in Germany with torrential rain that lasted for about 30 minutes. Everyone just stopped on the hard or shoulder & inside lane on the motorway with hazard lights on, as visibly was nex to 0.
I would hope that people who venture out are sensible.

Wolfiefan · 08/02/2020 21:44

SUV is tall? Not good in wind? Or wide and heavy? Better!
Also depends (not asking) exactly the route you’re taking. Coastal? Windy roads in Cornwall blocked by fallen trees? Or just to Exeter??

Hercwasonaroll · 08/02/2020 21:44

Why not set off now? You'll be there before it really hits.

fellyjish · 08/02/2020 21:52

It's an outlander so fairly squat I think. Will be M6/M5/a roads. Bristol area so not properly south west.

Pretty horrible out now and not sure I want to get the baby out of bed...!

I’m north of Bristol and something just got thrown across my garden by the wind. The M5 is not fun in the wind.
A local running group has cancelled an annual event as the weather is going to be so bad. And the local arboretum is closing too. I can’t remember the last time they did that.

Yika · 08/02/2020 22:02

I wouldn't. Especially not with a baby.

BridgetvonHammersmark · 08/02/2020 23:00

They were saying on the news tonight that you really shouldn’t travel tomorrow if you can avoid it. Trains are cancelled, planes... They’re warning of the possibility of damage to buildings, trees and the possibility of flying debris 😐 I really wouldn’t risk it if I were you OP, even if you drive very carefully, it’s still going to be dangerous.
