Really tempted to buy one but not sure how well it will last

I do & it’s like new still 2 years on

Dreamscomingtrue · 08/02/2020 16:22

No, I’d be too scared of drink spillage or the velvet wearing thin. Guess it depends how robust the material is. If it was industrial strength I might consider it. I wouldn’t go for a light colour either if I did get one.

CoffeeCoinneseur · 08/02/2020 16:25

I like them - but the sofa in our family lounge gets some heavy use.

I'd be worried about the velvet going flat/thin/it looking obvious which seats are used most, after a short while.

vinoandbrie · 08/02/2020 16:25

Yes, we have two in a sitting room that the kids are not allowed in! They’re lasting well, we’ve had them four or five years.

MurrayTheMonk · 08/02/2020 16:27

I'm sitting on one now.Though it's some sort of treated velvet I think ('clever velvet') i think it was called-but anyway it's wearing really well.

bellsbuss · 08/02/2020 16:30

Yes I've got them in 2 rooms and they wipe clean so easily, much easier to keep clean than normal fabric.

Yogawoogie · 08/02/2020 16:36

I miss my velvet sofa. It lasted 15 years and would have lasted longer if it wasn’t for heavy dh and a poorly cat.

BigPinkFlower · 08/02/2020 16:36

Its just like 1970s Draylon

Lardlizard · 08/02/2020 16:37

Is that a good or bad thing if it’s like Draylon ?

We’ve got a shocking pink velvet sofa in our chill room (with a bar - yes I know, bloody decadent). It’s not used as a family room so dd doesn’t use it and we don’t have pets so it’s fine but if you’ve got pets swerve it.

Honeywort · 08/02/2020 16:39

Ooh, I remember in the 70s we had our three piece suite recovered in dralon velvet - sofa was chocolate brown and the armchairs mushroom. As a kid I remember it being lovely and soft ( had previously been a scratchy green tweed). Obviously I only have a child’s memory of it but I don’t remember any drama about wear and tear.

Muckycat · 08/02/2020 16:40

Mine still looks hardly used despite me being a bit of a clumsy sod. I wouldn't get a light colour but it is a lovely cosy texture and seems to wear well. Mine is cotton velvet tho, not sure how synthetic would fare.

loutypips · 08/02/2020 16:41

No. I love the look, but have a crazy phobia of touching velvet. It makes me feel physically sick.
They look so nice though! Especially in really bright colours.

SalmonOfKnowledge · 08/02/2020 16:42

Not until after my son leaves home, no. But I like them!

BovaryX · 08/02/2020 16:42

Velvet sofas are lovely. In jewel colours, green, purple, red etc

KipperBang · 08/02/2020 16:46

We have a bright red velvet sofa in one of the living rooms of our house - looks perfect!

hernamewasrio · 08/02/2020 18:08

I love ours - super easy to wipe clean and we have dogs and kids.

StopChelping · 08/02/2020 18:26

I loved mine. Rich ruby red ones. Huge, comfortable, and looked like new for 7 years until I had to rehome them. I had a dog who laid on them daily and they still looked immaculate after a quick hoover.

Wish I didn’t leave them behind now. I still miss them. They were an utter bargain in the sales, I’m guessing they were bypassed by many for looking impractical.
