How to restore a white shirt that's picked up colour in the wash

It's only a very slight pinkish-cast, but I reckon it's worth a try to restore it. I've read online about what to do and the consensus seems to be:

  1. don't let it happen (not helpful - too late)
  2. don't let it dry out (not helpful - too late)
  3. try bleach (not helpful - label says don't use bleach)

The shirt is 77% cotton, 33% polyester and has a 'do not bleach' symbol.

I have confidence in the power of MN to advise which product will work!

Try a colour run remover and if that doesnt work maybe try the Ace stuff for whites

(23% polyester!)

pixie any particular brand that you'd recommend? Eg, Glo, Dr Beckmann etc?

I've never used Ace. Is it better than Ariel and other big brands?

Cat

Have you use it on a white shirt?

Anyone else?

1 vote for each of 3 products won't help when I'm in Tesco's laundry aisle Grin

C'mon MN, you can do better than this.

Or is my DH the only person to put his funeral shirt in the washing machine with his wife's hand-wash-only red dress....?

the dress is fine, thanks for asking

Colour run remover first then a whitening product eg: vanish or glo-white

dementedpixie · 08/02/2020 12:06

This is the ace liquid. Have seen it in some supermarkets and discount chemists

Colour run remover like Dygon or Glow White usually works. The brands are probably as good as each other.

ICouldHaveBeenAContender · 08/02/2020 12:18

petal - I already have Vanish, so just need the remover - thanks.

pixie - is Ace a colour remove, or just a different detergent?

Captain - you're probably right, won't be much to choose between the big brands.

You could just use a colour catcher sheet, this worked on a re wash of yellow shirts that had gone dingy from a dark green item. I always use one on a colour wash now. Less expensive and worth a try

dementedpixie · 08/02/2020 12:27

Ace is a stain remover, you use it alongside detergent. You can use it to soak items too as well as in the machine

Spartonian · 08/02/2020 12:27

Ace is like a mild bleach stain remover.

ICouldHaveBeenAContender · 08/02/2020 12:29

Thanks, Spartonian . So how do Ace and Vanish compare?

Asking as I already have industrial quantities of Vanish overbought in error

Is it the vanish for whites?

Ribenaberriesgowoo82 · 08/02/2020 12:36

I used Ace recently on accidently pink football socks along with Napisan and they came out like new.

CaptainMyCaptain · 08/02/2020 12:36

I think something like Vanish that is used for stains is different to a dye remover. I would use a product marketed as a dye remover. My husband washed a floral cotton dress of mine with his new grungy coloured T shirt. I thought it was ruined but Dygon restored it to its original loveliness.

DonPablo · 08/02/2020 12:38

Ace is bleach.

I'd just buy thin bleach and soak it in a weak solution of that. Way cheaper. But not helpful because you don't want to bleach it!

Update for anyone interested!

Found a Dylon Colour Run Remover in the cupboard. Tried it - no improvement.
Today, I checked out the Ace but decided against it (only comes in huge bottles?), and bought a Dr Beckmann Glowhite instead. Used it and - I think it's done the trick. The shirt is almost indistinguishable from a white hanky. The real test will be - will DH notice?!

If not, I might have to resort to Ace after all.

Thanks all!
