Runners - can you help me save a stinky polyester running jacket?

There's nothing wrong with it but the pits have just accumulated loads of stink over its life. Seems a shame to chuck it away.

I wash it with the dettol wash additive thing and have tried putting some of that directly on it in the last couple for washes but it's not really helped. It seems fine when it comes out of the wash but is pretty offensive after my run (my running top underneath is fine so it's definitely the jacket!)

Can I save it?

Hmmm.. I always put Zoflora in the washing drum for mine and that seems to work. Would have thought Dettol would do the same.

Would be shame to bin it.. try again with Zoflora and baking powder in the drum, and washing powder too?

Spudlet · 08/02/2020 10:13

Have you tried Febreezing it too?

CMOTDibbler · 08/02/2020 10:22

Try Halo sports wash. It actually seems to shift the smelly stuff rather than just covering up. We have a lot of stinky sports kit here, and even my 13 year old sons cycling kit smells nice (which is saying something, esp at this time of year training hard inside - the room absolutely reeks after)

Wrong time of year but hanging it up in strong sunlight helps.

DropZoneOne · 08/02/2020 10:26

Halo sports wash - pre treat the smelly areas then bung in the wash with the recommended dose. It's anti-fungal as well as anti-bacterial.

I had a nice scarf that gave off a chemical type smell. I soaked it in Lenor Unstoppables and the smell disappeared.

muddledmidget · 08/02/2020 10:33

Definitely Halo, it's the only thing that works on my husbands running and cycling stuff

Toomboom · 08/02/2020 10:35

My ex was a runner and his clothes used to stink after a run. I found the only way to deal with it was to wash them at higher temperature, 60%. This really helped. The problem with lower temperatures is they don't get rid of bacteria or germs.

Cailinnua · 08/02/2020 10:50

Run in through the machine with white vinegar instead of detergent

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 08/02/2020 10:51

I'd try 60 degree wash too. It probably won't ruin it as a one off and you can do it periodically. Napisan might also help.

motorcyclenumptiness · 08/02/2020 11:14

Another vote for napisan - I've resurrected some manky but well-loved kit with it. Also try to wash sweaty kit as soon as poss after wearing, rather than leaving it to ferment.

lastqueenofscotland · 08/02/2020 11:23

Vinegar instead of fabric conditioner

MadamePewter · 08/02/2020 11:25

Scoop of soda crystals in the wash.

Though I’m tempted by the halo stuff now... 😃

InvisibleToEveryone · 08/02/2020 11:41

Apparently spray or soak in neat vodka gets rid of sweat smells.

ShinyGiratina · 08/02/2020 12:45

Napisan. The washing line (a few days at this time of year)

I've got a couple of tops that really hoard the odour much more than any others. They come out of the wash OK but are very keen to go stinky again.

At least with running, most of the time you're in fresh air, safely away from other people's noses Grin Gym kit on the other hand...

AllTheIceCream · 08/02/2020 13:43

I generally use Halo too.

Polyester is a bit tricky cause it keeps the pong..
I managed to fix a cotton gi that had gone rogue Grin by

  1. treated armpits with neat Dettol laundry stuff, washed in Halo
  2. treated armpits with vinegar, did slow 40 wash with biological detergent ...repeated 1) and 2) possibly several times, but gis are >£100 so it was worth saving. It's still in use and inoffensive now.
cujo · 08/02/2020 13:50

Soak in two capfuls of zoflora and enough water to cover the top for at least 6 hours. When washing (no high temperature needed) put another capful of zoflora split between the washing powder and fabric softener sections. Never fails

MissingMySleep · 08/02/2020 13:56

I have a house of athletes here. Some very stinky kit. Put it out in the line for a week, use lots and lots of pegs so it doesn't get blown away. Rain and wind will sort it out. DH does iron man triathlons, a ridiculous amount of training and some of the stinky things are powerfully stinky. DS17 likes to do sport then leave kit in a bag under the bed. More stinky. Washing line always does the trick, even the ingrained armpit reek.

Blankiefan · 08/02/2020 18:05

Wow - loads of stuff to try. Thanks all. I'll work thru the ideas.
