I've posted in academic corner but wonder if better here for traffic.

I'm a lecturer. We're required to work on weekends sometimes (about 9 per year) to cover open days. This Sunday I'm supposed to work with my colleague. The problem is that storm ciara is bringing 60mph winds and heavy rain in my area.

I've got to take my son with me as I dont have childcare. I'm also meant to take another colleague who doesn't drive.

It's a 30 min drive.

I'm feeling uneasy about it but I'll be in trouble if I don't go. Am I being silly? I doubt v much 8f many visitors turn up but uni say too late to cancel.

Absolutely no doubt that I will be out in my car on Sunday , you are being a tad ridiculous .

DramaAlpaca · 07/02/2020 18:18

I would, yes.

CormoranStrike · 07/02/2020 18:21

I would too.

Tinnedpeachesandcream · 07/02/2020 18:22

I have plans all weekend involving driving. I’m not going to change any of them until the bad weather is actually here. Forecasts are regularly inaccurate.

fedup21 · 07/02/2020 18:23

I would drive yes-you need to get to work.

Do you think all the hospitals near you will close because the NHS workers would all prefer not to drive in the wind?

BarbaraofSeville · 07/02/2020 18:25

It would never occur to me to be concerned about driving on Sunday.

Unless there's a back story you are indeed being ridiculous.

MiniGuinness · 07/02/2020 18:26

I would. What will happen if you don’t go? I would be really pissed off if it was cancelled at such short notice. Some people may be coming from a lot further away than 30 minutes.

SnuggyBuggy · 07/02/2020 18:29

Surely it depends what the route is like. I mean I wouldn't drive near any cliffs maybe.

Windywuss · 07/02/2020 18:30

It's not ridiculous to ask opinions is it?

Fine, that's cool if 60mph winds don't phase anyone. But you know when it says not to travel unless absolutely necessary, I just thought about it. Mainly cos my young son will be with me.

Yes of course hospital staff etc suck it up. I appreciate that. My job isn't quite the same though.

I'm not changing plans, and would of course wait and see how weather is but I drove through horrendous storm few years ago and was v scared. I don't know how bad 60mph is though..so just wanted some opinions or reassurance.

Surely wait and see if there are severe driving warnings then see then?

Clangus00 · 07/02/2020 18:33

Have there been red warnings?
I thought it was only amber just now.

Windywuss · 07/02/2020 18:37

They seem to have revised it back down again now. I forgot about the red Amber yellow thing @Clangus00. Thanks, that's useful. I was just trying to remember or work out how bad 60mph is.

bathorshower · 07/02/2020 19:02

For me, 60mph is a bit high to cycle, but I'd be happy to drive and walk. But others may feel differently.
