Old social rules

I'm nearing 60. Looking at all the litter in the streets -nice rural area - i remembered when back in my youth, there were tv campaigns along the lines of don't be a litter lout.
Then I remembered adverts on tv about how to cross the road. Learn to swim. Clunk click every trip.

It seems these "social" rules or norms aren't being promoted anymore, or maybe it's because I don't watch (much) tv.

Does anyone else remember these campaigns? Is it a good thing they've stopped?

It was mostly a long series of Tory govnts then, so they were hardly a promoter of the "nanny" state.

What "social" campaigns would you want the government to push?

"Coughs and Sneezes Spread Diseases" ! They should just rerun that one every winterGrin

TeaAndStrumpets · 06/02/2020 20:28

Snap, Ethel!

ProfYaffle · 06/02/2020 20:31

There also used to be an inordinate amount of food 'boards', milk marketing board, egg board etc who advertised their wares.

"Accrington Stanley? Who are they?!"

5zeds · 06/02/2020 20:31

Come on guys, don’t be silly, put a condom on your willy.

Reginabambina · 06/02/2020 20:32

@damekindness I also have a fear of fridges after my mother told me an anecdote of a child that suffocated inside one after locking himself in during a game of hide and seek. In hindsight sight it was completely unnecessary because no one had fridges that closed that well by the time I was born. What was in the fridge advert?

Youcunnyfunt · 06/02/2020 20:37

I still reminisce about PSAs Grin there were a lot in the 90s!
The one about not to wear shellsuits to firework displays ShockGrin

I was in the Tufty club - I remember being given a Tufty badge when I was 4 ish at playschool. I'm 43.
Green cross code
Simon Says - Pylons and Strangers
Litter
Clunk click
Grange Hill and Just say No!
Aids Gravestone

I do recall some creepy 80's nuclear panic too ... We lived nearish to Hinkley Point power station and I recall being told we had 3 minutes if it went pearshaped. It was a bleak time, everything was doom ridden.

Here in Ireland there are a lot of road safety ads - I can think of ones for speed, drink driving, seatbelts, passing cyclists and motorway etiquette off the top of my head. Also ads warning about electricity poles and lines, and what to do if you smell gas.

chochaholic79 · 06/02/2020 20:48

Recently there has been a public campaign about antibiotics, which had a fun jingle :)

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 06/02/2020 20:51

Yes we have the antibiotics one too!

florriepeck · 06/02/2020 21:10

Recently, a pleasant neighbour from across the road called me as I walked past with my dog, to come and see his new puppy.
I immediately thought of Charlie saying that I should tell my mum ("Come and see my puppy" seemed an old chestnut).
Charlie must have had an effect on me, as I'm 56.
Also remember safety when on the beach: "Ooh, Petunia, he's waving at us now".
And I'd never put a rug on a polished floor("might as well set a man trap").

goingtotown · 06/02/2020 21:16

AIDS information Don’t die of ignorance
Wear something light at night
Spitting spreads diseases
Think once think twice think bike
Fancy a jar leave the car.

BelfastSmile · 06/02/2020 21:28

One of our recent ones in Northern Ireland is about not supporting paramilitaries. Seriously. They actually created a series of adverts to tell us that paramilitaries are bad.

Some of the ones we've had over the years have been pretty brutal, but I do remember when they used to talk them up before they were released, to create a big build up, and then we'd tune in to watch. The rest of the country anticipated the Corrie Christmas special; we waited excitedly for the latest "stop killing each other" ad.

BuckingFrolics · 06/02/2020 21:33

Wonderful! You've all reminded me of so many I'd totally forgotten. Now I've got "Charlie" ringing in my ears.

And yes of course TV doesn't have the mass coverage it once did - I missed that small fact. Doh :(

Even further back there were the war ones - walls have ears I think.

I’m in my late 30s with small children and we/they don’t watch adverts.

I think the messages behind those adverts mustn’t have been social norms at the the time otherwise there wouldn’t have been the need for an advert about it.

LilithTheKitty · 06/02/2020 21:48

I'm terrified of chip pans (not that anyone has them anymore). There seemed to be a lot of kids tv shows when I was little that would have a chip pan fire episode. They always made sure the proper way to put it out was shown. I'm guessing there were a lot of tragedies from people throwing water on them and the idea was to prevent that. It left me with the impression that all chip pans will randomly burst into flame every time they're used. I dont think I ever saw one on tv that didn't!

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 06/02/2020 21:57

That one where a car with people in it goes into water. It showed you how to get out of the seatbelt/ car. Really scared me when I was little though!

woodhill · 06/02/2020 22:14

Yes remember the chip pan - very scary

MAFIL · 07/02/2020 01:07

I recently found the old "Protect and Survive" films on YouTube to show my son after he asked me if it was scary living through the Cold War. I remember seeing them but not really taking them seriously. I think that even as a child I realised that in the event of nuclear war, hiding under the kitchen table was unlikely to be that useful.

AutumnRose1 · 07/02/2020 01:19

Notices about litter and smelly food on the Tube are all over the place

People pay no attention

Mum thinks they need to put the “no spitting” signs back up as well. I just don’t think people care.

managedmis · 07/02/2020 01:23

Clunk click every trip.

^^

What does this mean?!

DustyMaiden · 07/02/2020 01:23

Meet Dave, swims like a fish.

Bluerussian · 07/02/2020 01:27

I remember all those campaigns too, I'm just past 70. Can remember my son coming home from school and saying, "Pavements are for people", referring to those who parked their cars with two wheels on the pavement (his granddad :-). He felt quite strongly about it too, as kids do.

Then their was AIDS - strange adverts with the slogan, "Don't die of ignorance":. son and friend were playing with He Man figures and I heard mine say in an American type voice, "Don't die of ignorance Skeletor, use a condom". Followed by, "What is a condom, Mummy?".

I can't say I am up to date with the latest campaigns but know there's a lot of talk about looking after our planet, recycling and reducing the use of some things. Recently, going veggie or vegan from last month. I'm sure there are other issues, just can't think of them off hand.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 07/02/2020 04:59

I am 38 so not as old as you and I think there is less litter in my area than there was in the eighties when I was a child. The beck used to be full of crap including burnt out cars whereas now it's lovely and clean. The graffiti though is a lot worse. We keep getting people spraying on the side of our house and I just leave it now as if I clean it it just comes back. It's so anti social.

TerpsichoreanMuse · 07/02/2020 05:08

Put your seatbelt on. I'd forgotten it was Jimmy Saville. And just look at those assumptions about "ladies"
