Can you put spf on a newborn?

Baby is due in August, obviously I know babies are not meant to be in the sun at all but what about when they are in the pram or the sling or being transferred from car to somewhere can the uv days penetrate the car windows ?

Am I meant to get a spf and use it daily as it’ll be so hot that time of year and even with a shade and sun hat etc surely he/she needs some on ? I’m confused as my other dc were all winter babies !

I don’t think you’re meant to use it under 6 months.

My DS was an August baby and didn’t need it. I just kept him covered and used sun screens on the car windows and the bit that pulled over his car seat.

He never burned in the sling or being moved between sling/car. Just keep him covered when you’re out for a long time.

Assuming you live in the UK?

sickandtiredofsick · 06/02/2020 10:54

Yes in the UK I’m just worried about it as don’t want to risk sun damage on a tiny baby and wasn’t sure what I’m meant to do ! Some days can be so hot in August and I burn easily as do other dc

You can buy things for the car window and specific uv blockers for a pushchair.

No you can't; you just need to keep out of the sun as much as possible (but not totally 100% of the time - apart from on the hottest of days, a few minutes in sunlight is ok).

Buy a good parasol for the pushchair (avoid using blankets or whatever to shade the pushchair as that can quickly overheat the baby) and sun shades for the car windows.

You end up just seeking out shade wherever possible.

raspberryk · 06/02/2020 11:00

It's really not that hot or sunny in the UK except for the odd day. And no you shouldn't use spf.
Stay out of the sun at the hottest part of the day.
Wear a hat and cover skin with light clothing.
Sun shade on pram and windows.

Sexnotgender · 06/02/2020 11:01

No. They must be kept in the shade.

Also NEVER tack a blanket or anything as a cover over the pram, it creates an oven inside.

Thankyou I just wasn’t sure I feel like it’s my first just because I’ve only had winter babies !

Had DS in July and boots pharmacist said their baby range can go on newborns Confused.
Also for the car we got a 2 pack of window shades for the car from Halfords they're brilliant they cover the whole car window.
Also for the pushchair I brought a sunshade from Smyths which covered the whole of my carrycot with plenty of air space.

My DD is a summer baby.

Sun cream isn’t advised under 6 months if I remember correctly. Our pushchair has a large uv hood on, so that gets pulled down fully. We also have a sun parasol we use for it which is handy as can be tilted and moved about at different angles.

Sun shades for the car windows, sun hats and just trying to keep out of the sun between 11am-3pm.

Please don’t drape blankets/muslins cloths over anything though, I saw so many people still doing this last summer and it really worry’s me.

sickandtiredofsick · 06/02/2020 11:20

Def won’t put blankets etc over the pram with the others i didn’t but they were all older by the time it was summer this time I was just just worried as I’ve not had a summer newborn I don’t even know if the sling will be a good idea it may be too hot ?

The sling may be too hot, depends what the weather is doing. You can get special mesh ones for summer but I wasn't sure whether it was worth it given that the UK weather generally doesn't warrant it. My DD was born just before a summer heatwave and we spent the entire time with her in her nappy in a room with a fan going and curtains drawn, because she screamed blue murder anywhere else. Really sucked, because obviously I wanted to be out enjoying the weather! Hopefully it's not too bad by the time yours is born- the weather tends to be cooling down somewhat by August.

Southmouth · 06/02/2020 11:28

some days the sling may be fine, but other days then no it may be too hot for it.

DD was a very hot baby and would get very hot and sweaty in a sling so I avoided it over the warmer months.

puds11 · 06/02/2020 11:30

I really wouldn’t wear a baby in a sling on a warm day.

anon2000000000 · 06/02/2020 11:54

I did. My dd used sun cream and was in a sling in warm weather.
