Visiting Liverpool for the first time this weekend. Interested in any tips/insider information anyone has on things to do that don't involve The Beatles! Also any restaurant recommendations would be great. Just DH and I going, no kids.

If you like indian food try Mowgli or Bundobust.
There is a great exhibition on at the Walker gallery atm re vintage clothing.
Good shopping and docks area also nice. Bloody cold tho! There's plenty to do.

AvocadoAdvocate · 06/02/2020 09:48

Thanks JonSnow we love Indian food!

Waterfront museums are good and there's another one in the city centre.

Second the Bundobust recommendation, or El Gato Negro if you like tapas.

If the weather is nice, Crosby beach is a few minutes north of the city centre and you can walk on the beach and see the Antony Gormley statutes. There's a leisure centre that you can park next to for free.

Moose coffee do a good breakfast. If you like Italian food Casa Italia is always good (it's also always pretty busy and I don't think you can book unless you're in a larger group). I like the Liverpool museum on the waterfront. There's a place called brasco lounge next to it that does pretty good food. Go and have a look in the library too. It's a fabulous building. I always go for a wander in it even though I can't borrow books from there. It's near to the world museum and the gallery.

Baltic triangle - Thursday through Sunday Baltic market is open plus chains brewery with ghetto golf, red hangar market and arcains gaming bar.

Walk along Hope Street to see the Cathedrals, the Quarter is a beautiful independent Italian.

Museum of Liverpool on the waterfront is great.

For drinks have a look at liberte, Alma de Cuba for class. For fun, balls deep bar!

Avoid Matthew street after 5pm if you don’t want to feel like you’re on a stag do.

Plus obviously two football stadiums as an option.

Crosby beach is NOT a few minutes away from the centre - 20/30 minute drive depending on traffic and probably an hour by train.

Crosby's not an hour on the train!!! It's 20 mins from Liverpool Central to Blundellsands and Crosby station on the Northern Line (Southport service). They're every 15 mins. (There's a rail replacement bus service on the Northern line this Sunday though which will be a pain in the arse.)

once you get off the train, it is a good 10 minute walk to the Antony Gormley statues. Definitely worth a visit though. Mowgli has two restaurants - one on Water Street and one on Bold Street - same food but 2 very different buildings. Bold Street also has Maray (street food) and Leaf which generally has free events on over the weekend (music/comedy) and is a nice relaxed venue - they do a good cheeseboard from memory. Bold Street gets very busy at the weekend - it is near a lot of clubs and bars in surrounding streets.

There is a nice walled garden at The Bluecoat to sit in with a cup of tea and look at the rotating violins in the repair shop - good arts gallery as well. Then there's the Philharmonic Hall - on Hope Street between the two cathedrals, there is always a mix of events on there. The Philharmonic Pub on the corner opposite the hall, is famous for it's Victorian toilets! Loads of bars along there as well.

There is the Peter Blake, Razzle Dazzle ferry across the Mersey.

I would second the avoiding of Matthew Street.

Walker Art Gallery has some hidden gems; and would second the recommendation of the Library.

Wonderful place for a grown up weekend!

Hope Street should be your central focus. Glorious hotel, two cathedrals, great restaurants ... Have you booked tickets for whatever’s on at the Everyman theatre? Stupendous atmosphere.

Crosby Beach - definitely. Wrap up warm though.

Walker Art Gallery. Tate Liverpool. Maritime Museum.

Sefton Park Palm House would be a welcome relief at this time of year. Hard to drag yourself away, once there.

You’ll have a great time.

Thank you so much for the suggestions.
Crosby beach is the first thing on our itinerary - we're stopping off there on our drive down (have been checking tide times!), so thanks for the tip about free parking at the leisure centre.
I love a good library, so we'll put that on the itinerary.
Baltic market sounds like our kind of thing, and also the Bluecoat (hadn't come across either when researching so a great tip thanks!)
Will definitely avoid Matthew Street!
DH is a McCartney fan so The Beatles Story is inevitable - maybe I'll send him off there and I can go to the vintage clothes exhibition!

There's a new food market venue called Duke Street Food & Drink - might be another option for you.

I love Liverpool!
