What do you wish you’d had done in your lift conversion?

We’re thinking about getting this done and I’d love to know what you love or don’t love about your loft conversion. I’ve made expensive mistakes before and want this as close to perfect as it can be!

Loft conversion! But a lift up to it is going straight on the list.

More buttons. You can never have too many buttons.

BigPinkFlower · 05/02/2020 19:11

A lift costs £50,000 plus plus ongoing maintenance costs- I wouldnt put one in.

Our en-suite could have been a bit smaller, then a full height door width cupboard could have been put in to open up into what we use as a study area. We also have no place for wardrobes unless bed is moved over to one side and then you knock head on ceiling and another window in bedroom would have been a good idea.
My friend used a different loft company and has far better layout and more useful space even though her house is alot smaller than ours.

ilovebagpuss · 05/02/2020 19:19

We had our loft conversion done just before Christmas. It is 2 beds and a bathroom.
Honestly I love everything can’t believe it used to be a manky old roof space Grin.
The flooring is wood effect thick vinyl planks stuff we were going for engineered wood boards but this stuff was warmer under foot and it’s great easy to clean as the children went upstairs.
I don’t live the spots they are way to bright but we can fit dimmers so doing that also the velum style windows Keylite the blinds were very expensive as they had to be the exact brand to fit.
Work in some under eaves storage too.

I still love it as the view is great though.

ilovebagpuss · 05/02/2020 19:20

Sorry about the typos!

DobbyTheHouseElk · 05/02/2020 19:21

I thought this was about a conversation in a lift....think I need a kip!

CancelledCheque · 05/02/2020 19:27

I wish I had pushed for underfloor heating in the bathrooms. Otherwise I’m just delighted with ours: we turned our ghastly loft space into three bedrooms, a walk in wardrobe and two bathrooms plus two large storage cupboards in the eaves. I do wish we had chosen a different builder as he was very slow and became unreliable at the end.

We put in several velux windows and the space is so bright. We got the fitted blackout blinds for them which were really worth it especially in summer.

We got an architectural technologist to draw up plans and he made better use of the space than I thought was possible, so that was very much worth doing.

Elieza · 05/02/2020 19:34

Don’t sleep in a loft conversion with velum windows (ie on a slant rather than vertical windows) if you don’t like the sound of battering rain!

Elieza · 05/02/2020 19:35

Velux, stupid bloody autocorrect. Velum ffs that’s a type of paper. That’s not gonna be watertight ha ha Grin

TeenPlusTwenties · 05/02/2020 19:57

I love our loft conversion.

As many windows as you can afford.
Think where the bed is going and if possible have windows either side of bed for extra headroom getting in and out.
Similarly a window above basin in en suite of you have one.
Blackout velux blinds.

We actually have fewer radiators than they recommended and it's fine, (and don't have underfloor heating in ensuite as hot water pipers just do the job anyway).

CancelledCheque · 05/02/2020 20:11

I love the sound of rain but yes, it’s prominent on a velux window!

stanski · 05/02/2020 20:33

We finished ours 3 weeks ago and absolutely love both our en suite as well as the walk in wardrobe. Just means you can hide all the mess away and the rooms remain glorious :)

Callmejudith · 05/02/2020 20:42

Think carefully about where the radiators will go and consider having upright rads to save space. Carpet under the eaves (just off cuts). Don't get a ridiculously small sink in the bathroom

PenelopePissedstop · 05/02/2020 20:46

I always recommend even if you don’t want a bathroom now, whilst the house is in chaos and stripped back to bones of the building, run the appropriate pipes anyway. It’s easy to hook up to later if your circumstances or requirements change.
Don’t stint on the plug points / sockets and have the ones with usb chargers by the bed to cut down on the visual clutter and sticking out chargers etc. If you want privacy or can’t afford loads of windows or it’s visual clutter on your roof outside look at sun tubes for over sinks and bathroom fittings. Depending on your building it might be worth looking to tube down to the floor below. Will you want low level / brightness lights on your new staircase, Will you need a plug point between rooms < for your vacuum cut a bit of string the same length of your vacuum cord > to check you will be able to clean stairs if they are carpeted ! if you are contemplating solar panels at some stage now is the time to review the window locations with that in mind. Don’t stint on the roof insulation material - to assist with the fact that you need to help it be cool in the summer and warm in the winter. We have windows in both sides of roof for a whisper of air circulation year round.

ElfishBiatch · 05/02/2020 20:51

Built in wardrobes to maximise space, air conditioning, and get a proper architect to design the layout (not just someone from the loft company!)

Lochroy · 05/02/2020 20:51

Wish I'd had built in speakers for the muzak Grin

LonginesPrime · 05/02/2020 21:20

I thought this was about a conversation in a lift.

Me too - like a missed opportunity to say something you would never normally get the chance to say to a crush or a celebrity or CEO or someone.

TheoneandObi · 05/02/2020 21:24

Better insulation. They can be hot in the summer and cold in the winter. Get the max and then a bit more!

KatyMac · 05/02/2020 21:35

I'm getting a workshop in mine & I am ecstatic about getting a plug, some Strip lighting and a staircase Wink

BillieEyeFish · 05/02/2020 23:04

Thank you. I’ll be sure to add a lot of sockets and as many buttons/ cameras as possible.

I hadn’t thought about extra windows but it makes sense. We’re thinking about the Veluxes that open out into balconies but can’t afford too many of those!
