Where does your baby nap - day time

My baby is 9 weeks old, just wondering where you let baby nap during the day? She’s currently in her Moses basket in the living room during the day and whilst I carry on as normal noise wise it’s difficult to do certain things without naturally disturbing her. If you moved daytime naps upstairs, what age did you do this from?

At that age, both of mine always napped in my arms, or otherwise in a sling or pushchair or the car. I’m not keen to be stuck at home all day so neither of mine have ever napped in a cot at home (though they sometimes fell asleep on the sofa with me there).

DC1 in my arms, every nap, always until he was nearly 2 when he might sleep in the pram, if I was lucky.

DC2 in the Moses basket if we were home, or in the car/ pram/ my arms if we were out. DC2 never progressed to day time naps in the cot but will sleep in her pram at home.

My baby napped in my arms until ten months old Grin(occasionally napped in the buggy)

Pram, my arms, crib in living room. Since he's been around 1 yr he's napped on the sofa in the living room. My older two napped in beds, first from around 6 months, the other from a yr. But as older two are always in their rooms, it's quieter downstairs for dc3 to nap.

PowerslidePanda · 05/02/2020 21:31

The safe sleeping advice is that daytime naps should be in the same room as you until they're 6 months. We used a Moses basket in the living room until they outgrew it, and a travel cot in the living room between then and 6 months.

MySonThePotato · 05/02/2020 21:37

My baby napped in a pram or Moses basket from about 4 weeks old. I wouldn't have left him alone in a room for hours at a time but was certainly happy to go in and out of the room rather than being there constantly. I used his nap times to have a shower, eat lunch, and get chores done.

There is a suggestion that sleeping in a separate room from an adult may be a SIDS risk factor, but that's just one factor to weigh up. Baby needs you to be well-rested and functioning. If you find that upstairs naps work for you, as long as you check on baby regularly and follow other safe sleep guidelines, I don't think many people would judge you.

HotChocolatemarshmallows · 05/02/2020 21:47

On me. He's 1 now and still only naps on me 😍

MySonThePotato · 05/02/2020 21:48

Interestingly I've just checked the safe sleep guidance and it's now very clear that a parent should be in the same room during daytime as well as night-time sleep.

That said, I think it's important to be pragmatic and not to beat yourself up if you want to leave your baby napping in a different room on the same storey of your house for 5 minutes so you can have a wee and brush your teeth. But that's my personal tolerance of risk, and others' mileage will vary.

Pipanchew2 · 05/02/2020 22:31

Both of mine always napped in the Pram. This meant I could wheel the Pram between rooms (downstairs) to keep them close when little And also meant when older I didn’t need to go home for nap time if we were out....

forevercurious · 06/02/2020 07:52

My baby is also 9 weeks old and I’ve been wondering the same. He will fall asleep on me and then I try to place him in his pram top for a downstairs day time nap. Sometimes he will wake up, other times he will stay asleep. I’ve been wondering about trying him upstairs in his crib as he settles better there but also want to follow the side guidelines. the few times he’s napped upstairs have been when I’m doing jobs upstairs and pop in every few minutes. I certainly don’t spend all of the time in the room as I’d never get anything done otherwise!

HarrietM87 · 06/02/2020 08:00

Until about 6 months mine slept in my arms. I was bf and used to love the time to rest. From 6 months on he napped in the pram. At first we would need to keep pushing it to keep him asleep but after a while we could just park it in the hall once he dropped off. He still does this at nearly 2 and I much prefer it to cot naps as it means we can get out and about during the day. Highly recommend a snooze shade!

xine15 · 06/02/2020 08:40

In the house it has to be on me (or someone else) she just won't sleep otherwise or stay asleep if I put her down so I get nothing done! She used to be able to be put down but not any more!

When out and about she will sleep in her pram or occasionally in her car seat. I can also put her down if she fall asleep on me outside the house as long as it's a noisy enough environment (weird huh!).

She is almost 7months.

Damntheman · 06/02/2020 10:50

Both of mine napped in the pram on the veranda unless it was colder than minus 10. Worked out nicely! They got fresh air and napped perfectly, I got some solid rest and/or could get stuff done without worrying about making noise.

yummychoccy · 06/02/2020 19:44

On me, in sling, in pram, in sleepyhead whilst on sofa.

If you want to follow safe sleep guidance then you need to be in same room as baby whilst they sleep.

Hercwasonaroll · 06/02/2020 19:45

7 weeks

Sling mainly, pushchair or car seat occasionally.

ColourMyDreams · 06/02/2020 19:48

If it was a nice sunny day, I used to put them in their pram in the garden. If it was bad weather I used to put them in their cot in their bedroom.

ColourMyDreams · 06/02/2020 19:51

I don't understand all this about being in the same room as you at all times. What is it going to do if you're not? Explode?

GenevaMaybe · 06/02/2020 19:53

Mine napped in their moses basket in the nursery and then in their cot

bloodywhitecat · 06/02/2020 19:55

12 weeks and he naps in his moses basket in the living room during the day.

polkadotpixie · 06/02/2020 19:57

On me. He still does at 17 months, absolutely will not nap anywhere but on someone or in the car 😩

Biscuitsandteaplease · 06/02/2020 20:01

In the cot in his bedroom from 5 weeks. We live in a small-ish flat and I can always hear him and vice versa. He would also nap in car or pram if needed.

Namechangeymcnamechange11 · 06/02/2020 20:03

At that age, on me, sometimes put down on a play mat while I sat in the same room and drank tea while it was hot Grin or in the moses basket, also in the same room. In the pram if out and about.

EmmiJay · 06/02/2020 20:12

Awww I loved that age🤗 I bought my huge corner suite just for her to be able to nap on really lol. So I'd lie her on her blanket (edges tucked in) and move about the place. I live in a flat so could always hear her. She napped on the sofa until she was 2 and naps were obsolete. Now she sleeps perfectly on her own in her own bed, very rarely coming into my bed. Bliss!

GenevaMaybe · 06/02/2020 21:01

People get very worked up with keeping the baby with them at all times. The most important things for avoiding SIDS are baby sleeping flat on their back on a firm mattress with well-fitted sheet, and that no one in the family smokes.

VanillaLatteAndCake · 06/02/2020 21:49

Well I feel very guilty now...! Baby has daytime naps in the bouncer as she won't nap in the moses basket. If she falls asleep in the car, I carry the seat into the house and let her continue the nap in the car seat. (If it gets close to 2 hours, I'll attempt to move her into the moses basket.)
As for staying in the same room, I do try to but I also use the time to do jobs around the house so I'm often popping upstairs or out to the garage.
