What did you take to school as a kid?

Name changed as potentially outing (but potentially not!) Pom bears, screaming at the sistine chapel, etc etc.

Chatting with a friend and suddenly remembered that as a kid in primary school, I kept my stuff (exercise books, pencil case, lunch) in... a briefcase.

A black leather briefcase with a combination lock.

Didn't wear uniform, and this was the mid-90s, so I would have been a 7 year old with frizzy blonde hair and big glasses, wearing leggings, an oversized t-shirt, big white trainers and... an adult-sized black leather briefcase.

It's JUST occurred to me (at the age of 33) that that is SERIOUSLY WEIRD!

Asked my DF what in the world we were thinking, and why I didn't just have a backpack like a normal kid, and he says it WAS normal in those days – but I don't seem to remember any of my peers also having a briefcase like someone working in the City Grin

What did you carry your books in as a kid? Any other briefcase enthusiasts?!

Regular bag for books but I did take the cat for show and tell.

I was in Primary early to mid seventies and we took nothing up school. PE kit went in once a term and we had no books stationary anything to take.

raspberryk · 05/02/2020 13:27

I had school lunches, books and pencil cases left in the desks and drawers in ththe classrooms.
Any thing else was taken in a plastic bag. Other kids had drawstring bags and backpacks. Also in mid 90's.
I had a shoulder bag or rucksack at secondary and at one point we all wore our 2 shouldered bags over 1 shoulder diagonally or slung so low it was right down on your butt.
Never ever saw anyone with a briefcase that's hilarious.

I went to primary school in the 70's so no uniform or need to carry books as everything was kept at school. Only things I ever carried was a small cross body bag containing tissues - I had chronic hayfever plus the loos only had hard loo paper. Also my clarinet when it was music practice.

FishCanFly · 05/02/2020 14:33

i had a vintage military medic's bag. very impractical but super cool.

I don't remember taking anything to primary school other than my lunchbox.

I DO remember one of my friends started secondary with a briefcase though - and thinking it was quite weird. This was late 80s.

UnexpectedItemInTheShaggingAre · 05/02/2020 14:44

I had a lilac backpack with Kittens on in infants and the first year or so of juniors, then I had a billabong or ripcurl backpack in the rest of juniors and an red leather satchel at high school, unless it was pe day when me and my twin sister would fight for dads gym holdall

Timeforatincture · 05/02/2020 15:22

Two Rich Tea biscuits in a paper bag, carefully folded. Infants/Juniors.

And for the life of me I can't remember what the paper bag was in. Coat pocket perhaps?

It was an awfully long time ago.

@JuanSheetIsPlenty * 😂😂😂

Brilliant! Was conkers an odd thing to play when you were a child?*

Playing conkers when you were a GIRL was odd, apparently! Poor Mr H had never taught girls before me - I don’t know how he was so sheltered, but I was an education to him!

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 06/02/2020 15:54

Oh wow! He was sheltered! We had a school organised trip to collect conkers once a year and then a conker fight in the playground once we’d all gone home and soaked them in vinegar! Grin
