Essential or luxury?

Today at the school I overheard one of the mums telling another that she was buying her son a new jacket for his birthday as it was too small. Now is it just me or surely a coat comes under essentials and something you should buy regardless. I know some people are strapped for cash and I know everyone has different ideals. I can understand if a child already has a jacket and they’ve asked for another one specifically. So tell me what you think? Obviously before someone gets on thier high horse, each to thier own and I regard jackets as an essential I was just intrigued.

Depends what time of year it is. Run up to birthdays/Christmas then 'essentials' become gifts. I'm lucky that I can 'just buy' a new coat however DD REALLY wanted a fluffy coat for Christmas. It was on her list so I got it for her. If she had asked in January and she was due a new coat, I would 'Just buy' it.

Disclaimer: I cannot afford designer/labels but a good coat from mid level/high street. I would neither gift or 'just buy' a designer coat for dc's because I can't bloody afford it for me, let alone them!
