Has anyone ever spoken to a doctor before starting an exercise or diet?

I don’t know if they still do this, but whenever I used to read about a new diet or an exercise regime it used to say at the end “speak to your doctor before starting this”.

Unless you’re on medications or have mobility issues or underlying health issues etc I always thought it was a bit weird. Like going to the GP and saying am I ok to do yoga? Particularly now with appointments so hard to come by. But this is Mumsnet and I always learn something new, so I’m sure I’ll be proved wrong!

I am a yoga teacher and I do ask people who come to me with a particular problem that may cause an issue.

So for instance someone came to a beginners class the other day with a particular long term injury, I checked with her if she had cleared it with her doctor and/or physio that she could join a yoga class and she had. In fact the physio had suggested it.

So, I think if you have no medical reason why you wouldn't be able to exercise then you dont need to make an appointment to ask your GP but if you have any underlying illnesses or injuries that you're not sure about and are undergoing medical or physio care at the moment then its best to clear it with them when you are next at an appointment.

I can't imagine how many appointments I would have wasted my GP's time over the last 30 years!!!
