That dont cost a fortune? Have about 20 kids coming ranging from toddler to 8.

Hate party bags they're such a waste of money

Some of the suggestions here - books, craft sets from hobbycraft etc - are what I would give as the gift to the actual birthday child. Seriously just give a packet of Smarties as I said upthread. It's not their birthday. They don't need a 'gift'.

But they're not for you.

For the older children you can get cheap craft items, eg make a mermaid or owl in The Range for £1. A bit of sewing and gluing on felt pieces.

I just give them their slice of cake and a cuddle bye-bye.

We do a pot plant and seeds - it has varied between a compostable pot, brightly decorated pots and pots that the children can decorate themselves. I get little wage slip envelopes, pop seeds in and add a thank you note on each envelope. I like it, not sure what the parents think!

Chocolate (rather than sweet) cone went down well, playmobil/LEGO blind bags, water bottle, cake mix (either bought or homemade), selection of toys from toysforapound and have a lucky dip - either done or seen all of these and been well received.

A personalised cup cake/ biscuit each to take home ?

I don’t get why people give a slice of cake rather than eat the cake at the party! If you don’t eat the cake at the party you have to buy other cakes/biscuits for him to eat at the party and the birthday cake just gets mangled and squished in a bit of a napkin!
The secret to party bags is to buy cheap in the sales and tuck away in the cupboard until birthday time. One year we gave teeny little calculators which went down very well. I tend to think it’s better to give one nice thing than a bag full of tat. Some years we just gave a decent sized bar of chocolate with a sticker on saying thank you for coming to the party.

@chocatoo I loved the squishy bit of birthday cake in a napkin! Smile There's usually so much food and treats eaten during the party, with the cake being presented at the end, then by the time its cut and divided it's usually time to go so much better as a takeaway and enjoyed when not so full!
