How do you go supermarket shopping with a baby?

This may be a stupid question but I'm just wondering how other people do a food shop with a small baby. Obviously you can't manage a pram and trolley at the same time so I think I'll use the sling, but not everyone has slings so what do you do? I've only recently passed my driving test so haven't really thought of the logistics until now!

My Aldi has special baby seats for the under six month babies. Put a blanket down first and then off you go.

Tulipsinmyvase · 03/02/2020 18:33

Online shop once a week or so for the big shop. Then if I do pop into tesco express or Aldi I use a basket or the pram basket, but would only grab a few essentials and nothing heavy

TheNoiseHurts · 03/02/2020 18:35

OP you had the answer straight away, but you ignored it for "oooh good idea" posts 🤷🏼‍♀️

There's trollies specifically designed to put the car seat in.

They have been around for years.

Problem solved.

And failing that the car seat shaped chair.

Lipperfromchipper · 03/02/2020 18:39

@TheNoiseHurts and you ignored her answer clearly she said she cannot use then as she uses a joie 360 car seat which does not come out of the car! It is anchored and isofixed. ConfusedHmm

Peanutbutteryogurt · 03/02/2020 18:41

Sling or put them in the trolley baby seat. Aldi have trolleys with seats suitable for very young babies

BecauseReasons · 03/02/2020 18:45

You use the Aldi version of these:

@HavenDilemma Why? My Joie 360 was sold as suitable for newborns uk.joiebaby.com/product/i-spin-360/

RhymingRabbit3 · 03/02/2020 18:54

@HavenDilemma
Joie 360 is suitable from birth, it comes with a newborn insert. Not forward facing obviously but there are more options for newborns than just baby carriers which go onto a travel system.

OP as others have said, the moulded plastic seats attached to a shopping trolley would be fine, or a sling. It seems like a huge task at first but once you've done it a few times you'll be fine :)

Douberry · 03/02/2020 18:56

Take the pram and use a basket and get essentials only. Get DH to do a bigger shop as needed. Get a buggy clip to dangle shopping from, like this:

www.amazon.co.uk/My-Buggy-Buddy-Pram-Clip/dp/B0035FQEVQ/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=my+buggy+buddy&sprefix=my+buggy&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1580756003&sr=8-3

It sounds like you mainly want to browse the aisles and pick up some essentials and non essential items from the tat aisle. I also spent a lot of my mat leave browsing the newly opened Aldi in our town so I can sympathise!

Purplelion · 03/02/2020 19:27

I’m sorry but I have to do this after seeing it SO many times.
CENTILE! Babies are on centilesnot percentiles!

Oh and use a sling, I never use a buggy for my 5 month old, just a buckle carrier or ring sling.

PatricksRum · 03/02/2020 20:05

I wouldn't put a child that young in a trolley. Still don't 20 months later
A sling.

Pinkywoo · 03/02/2020 20:12

Thanks @Lipperfromchipper! Yes exactly that @Douberry, DH does the main shop so it's just a few bits and tat so I think I'm going to use the sling, just wasn't sure if I was missing something obvious!

@Purplelion can't believe I didn't pick up on that, I'm usually such a pedant, I blame the lack of sleep! Blush

I used the baby seat trolley when DC2 was a few weeks old but I was doing a full weeks shop in Aldi.

If I can't be arsed, secretly to stop myself from spending too much, with the trolley and push her in the pram I use the IKEA blue shopping bag as it carries a ton of stuff easily on my shoulder.
I might look like I'm off to do my laundry but it means I don't have to go back and forth with the trolley from the car at the end.

BecauseReasons · 03/02/2020 20:54

Why not?

PatricksRum · 03/02/2020 20:59

@BecauseReasons
I like to keep my child close to me. I don't put them in a pram etc but at that age I would definitely not put them in a trolley.

NameChange30 · 03/02/2020 21:02

Sling and shallow trolley (it won't work with the big ones because it's impossible to reach down into them with baby in sling)

Or

Trolley with baby seat, I have noticed that some trolleys have little reclining plastic seats on them that are suitable for babies.

Fair enough, each to their own and all that. I found slings terrifying when I tried to use them with tiny babies- had to keep checking on their breathing all the time.

99problemsandthecatis1 · 03/02/2020 21:50

My first loved a sling, was never out of it. Such a lifesaver.

Assumed DC2 would be the same but she really doesn't like them.

PatricksRum · 03/02/2020 22:25

@BecauseReasons That's a shame. I'm the opposite. It can regulate their breathing as long as their face is visible and you can kiss their forehead.

BecauseReasons · 03/02/2020 23:19

Yeah, but too many small babies have died in them for me to be comfortable using them for the very small. We did use ours more once baby could hold their head up independently.

KellyHall · 03/02/2020 23:31

I used a baby bjorn carrier, it's structured so being able to hold their head isn't as much of an issue and if you correctly adjust the straps, so baby's head is close enough for you to kiss it, their face is totally uncovered and you can feel their breath on your neck/chest.

DillBaby · 03/02/2020 23:40

CENTILE! Babies are on centiles not percentiles!
A centile and a percentile are exactly the same thing. Both words are used interchangeably.

DillBaby · 03/02/2020 23:40

And you can totally push a pram with one hand and pull a trolley with the other.

meandmylot · 03/02/2020 23:44

You use the trolley that pp have posted pictures of. Just line it with a large muslin or blanket.
