How can I help a 5yo with toothache on a Sunday?

5yo DD is crying in pain. I've given her paracetamol half hour ago so might not have kicked in yet but she's wailing so I'm wondering what else I can give her. Have got her to rinse with salt water, I've no bonjela but could go get some. She's asthmatic so shouldn't take ibuprofen.

Anything else I can do? She said she feels a bit sick with the pain. Yesterday she was eating a squashie sweet and said something was crunchy in it so in all probability she could have chipped a tooth (on a squashie??) but the tooth she says is sore (molar) doesn't look chipped at all and I can't see anything wrong with it.

Has she lost any yet? My 5 year old stepson lost his first one a couple of months before his 6th birthday and has been quickly followed by another 2. He says they are sore before they start to fall out/be wobbly. Could this be it? Anyway its beside the point what is causing it really, can you pick up some ambesol from anywhere? Although if she doesn't improve 111 might be able to get an appointment for her somewhere? I hope she is better soon.

Also why do these things always happen on a bloody Sunday!

SeansNiece · 02/02/2020 15:59

She hasn't lost any yet so that could be it I suppose.

I know, every emergency we've ever had seems to land on a friday evening or a Sunday!

Can you call 111 and get advice, a maybe an out of hours dentist?
A warm hot water bottle against her cheek might help. Also if she reliable at spitting out mouth wash, something containing hydrogen peroxide is good for relieving tooth ache.
Hope she's feeling better soon.

We don't even have 111 here (N.Ireland) so would have to be emergency dentist if it doesn't settle.

Stew some cloves in warm oil to make a rubbish version of oil of clove, may help

stevenage42 · 02/02/2020 16:14

Avoid cloves in a child. Call your dentist and there should be an answer phone prerecorded message explaining what to do next in an emergency. There are emergency clinics in Northern Ireland. Don't delay. The longer you leave it the more difficult it will be. No the meantime stick to analgesics. (I'm a dentist)

Ambusol (sp) is better than bonjella i would try and get in touch with the emergency dentist or it might be a long nightpoor girl.

Mrsjayy · 02/02/2020 16:15

Anbesol. Not the rubbish i said.

MyNameHasBeenTaken · 02/02/2020 16:28

My dd is asthmatic.
She has never had a problem with baby nurofen.
But check with her gp first

MyNameHasBeenTaken · 02/02/2020 16:29

And medijel is really good.
Pound land version of bonjela.

TakeMeToYourLiar · 02/02/2020 16:40

Anbesol is magic. Had it for teething DS abd tried it myself in desperation with toothache. It's great

SeansNiece · 02/02/2020 20:02

Thanks all. I tried to get hold of an emergency dentist but the phone stayed on voicemail all day with the message not to leave any voicemails!! I'll be mentioning how rubbish a system that is when I ring the dentist tomorrow. I ended up ringing out of hours who won't see dental patients but did get a call back from the nurse to say go ahead with some ibuprofen for tonight and alternate hot/cold packs and if she doesn't settle through the night to ring them back.

DD is much more settled now so I'm hoping she sleeps well and we get a dentist appointment tomorrow.

Ice instead of a hot water bottle.

TakeMeToYourLiar · 03/02/2020 17:00

How is she today?
