Can you recommend a warm white/off white paint colour please?

Before I go mad. Preferably Dulux but if not something durable and with good coverage. It’s for a darkish flat and I want something fresh and clean but not stark, cold and clinical looking.

I’ve tested linen and delicate white by crown. Rotten coverage and too stark.

Dulux pebble shore and something else pebbly - too grey. White cotton - too cold.

Farrow and Ball - old white - looks dirty

I’m going quietly bonkers and decorator starts a week tomorrow. Any recommendations please?

Little Greene slaked Lime.

Roselilly36 · 02/02/2020 16:17

Dulux Natural Hessian is nice, IMHO

BriefDisaster · 02/02/2020 16:18

We used Chalk White by Wilko downstairs which is a lovely bright off-white colour. I was sceptical because it's cheap paint but it was honestly brilliant to use.

I have both F and B clunch (archive, but easily obtained) and Dulux jasmine white in my home and love them.

Bridal Veil by Valspar.

NotMiranda · 02/02/2020 17:11

My whole flat apart from kitchen and bathroom is painted in Dulux Light & Space Desert Wind and I'd recommend it. I love it - it's a pale warm creamy colour that's nice both in daylight and artificial light.

Natural Calico

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 02/02/2020 17:14

Dulux Timeless is really nice.

hawleybits · 02/02/2020 17:22

Dulux Timeless seems to be the chameleon of off whites. Good in all lights and doesn't feel stark. It's in every room in my house and I always recommend it.

Deluxe Timeless, Deluxe Timeless, Deluxe Timeless,

and did I say Deluxe Timeless,?

Sheld0r · 02/02/2020 17:51

Fired Earth - Chalk white

MeanMrMustardSeed · 02/02/2020 17:55

We bought a massive tub of Timeless, convinced it was the paint for us, but we just didn’t like it. Eventually went with F&B Pointing and absolutely love it.

Snakelet · 02/02/2020 18:07

Thank you all so much. I have just daubed Timeless and Fine Cream onto two pieces of board and am waiting to do a second coat. So far both of these are the best I’ve tried and I’m pretty sure 🤞🏻one of them is going to be good. First impressions have put the fine cream into the lead. So good to have all these recommendations.

You say the coverage is poor. Are you painting over a dark or strong colour? or patterns?

light grey matt emusion is good for obliterating.

if the colour is light but "different" apply a couple of coats of matt PBW (which is cheaper than colours) from a reputable brand before applying your chosen finish. You can get a 15litre tub of own-brand from Wickes (that's as cheap as I would go). Don't buy "Essentials" or "Basic" or Budget paint

Be sure to mix very thoroughly as pigment tends to sink.

Snakelet · 02/02/2020 18:31

Thanks PigletJohn . The coverage was only poor with the Crown testers. The Dulux and F&B ones are fine. It’s to cover over a yellowy cream large areas of which have been re-plastered and therefore a pinky/browny dried plaster colour.

I had this problem so went for Farrow & Ball’s undercoat in the end.

Its a lovely warm white. Just perfect.

Snakelet · 02/02/2020 18:42

NightsOfCabiria wow - would never have thought to try out the undercoat but I can see how after working my way through every flipping sample in the range, that seems like the next thing to try. Glad you were happy with the result.

Another one for Farrow & Ball Pointing.

gingercat02 · 02/02/2020 18:47

My mum has just had her whole flat painted Bakers Flour (Dulux) and the painter and my 11 yo ds have both commented what a lovely colour it is. She almost choose vanilla white as an alternative OP

CyberPixie · 02/02/2020 18:59

Dulux white cotton. Its a very light ivory, some lights it's a warm white.

ThunderboltandLightning · 02/02/2020 19:05

Whole of our upstairs is Dulux Timeless. Didn't even bother with tester pots.

Tr1skel1on · 02/02/2020 19:22

Dulux jasmine white, warm but yellow hint not orangey. Avoid the Dulux almond white, awful :(

PigletJohn · 02/02/2020 19:36

If you have new plaster, give it a couple of coats of matt white emulsion to even up the absorbency and texture. Otherwise it will show through. At least one thinned coat and at least one unthinned.

This will also highliht to your eye any remaining blemishes. Fill and smooth them and paint them again as described.

Is the new plaster fully dry, and light pink with no shiny or chocolate patches?

Snakelet · 02/02/2020 20:09

Thanks everyone. Piglet yes the plaster looks pink now. It was done a week ago and won’t be painted on until a week tomorrow.

I’m not painting it myself and the decorator is going to sand down the walls and undercoat and if the paint doesn’t take well over the 2 almost fully plastered walls he says he might line them.

NightsOfCabiria · 02/02/2020 23:11

My freshly plastered walls took FOUR coats, including a proper fresh plaster undercoat. I thought it was never going to end at one point!
