Eating eggs after use by date in cake...

Dd made a cake tonight using eggs with a use by date of 22 January- she reckons the cake tastes funny, though I had some and thought it was fine. Would you eat it?

I wish she would check dates. I bought eggs this week. Didn't realise others were still there...

Eggs are fine after their use by dates (at least a couple of weeks). I'd eat it.

Justajot · 01/02/2020 23:39

And you'd know if an egg was off. I've only ever seen one off egg, but the smell was enough to make me retch.

thatonesmine · 01/02/2020 23:41

Are any eggs left in that pack? If so pop them in a bowl of water, if they sink they're good, float and they're bad. Like ducking for witches.

How out of date were the eggs? I regularly use eggs past their use-by date, I think you'd know if they were off.

AlexaShutUp · 01/02/2020 23:42

Yes, I do the float test too.

eggs are usually fine at least a month past then use by date. I use the float test too, mainly because if you crack an off egg you really no about it Envy

DramaAlpaca · 01/02/2020 23:45

Eggs are fine ages after the date on the box.

You really would know if an egg was off as soon as you cracked it.

squee123 · 01/02/2020 23:45

forgive my typos Blush

Howmanysleepsnow · 01/02/2020 23:47

So, what if an egg half floats ie stands on end, just of the base of the pan but not on the surface? I threw 6 away for this today, 2 days past the date. Would they have been ok?

tenlittlecygnets · 01/02/2020 23:56

I broke one of the other eggs into a bowl. Smelled and looked absolutely fine. I said to dd that you should be able to smell if an egg is off...

If the yolk and part of the white is raised it is fresh. If the yolk is raised it is also.ok. once yolk is flat with white, it is not ok.

nutellalove · 01/02/2020 23:58

The date on most eggs is best before rather than use by, therefore should be fine

SpaceCadet4000 · 02/02/2020 00:00

I've always eaten eggs past their use day. It is worth testing them with the water method, but if you've ever cracked a bad egg you really do know straight away.

MrsFezziwig · 02/02/2020 00:03

I would tell her that it would be very dangerous to eat the cake so I could have it all to myself

dellacucina · 02/02/2020 00:06

It's fine.

katy1213 · 02/02/2020 00:10

I've only once had a rotten egg; believe me, you'd know. Apart from poached eggs - which never work well unless they're fresh - eggs last for ages beyond the date.

colette1970 · 02/02/2020 00:11

Put in a bowl of water if sinks is ok if floats then bad if mid way are ok for hard boiled eggs

comingupafterthebreak · 02/02/2020 00:21

Put in a bowl of water if sinks is ok if floats then bad

Does this work if the eggs are already in a cake? Grin

squee123 · 02/02/2020 02:09

@Howmanysleepsnow in my experience they're fine like that

Wallywobbles · 02/02/2020 02:43

You'd not have a second of doubt if it wasn't ok.

GeeUnit · 02/02/2020 02:52

I eat them weeks after.
