Did you start a new career after 50?

Hi! I'm looking for some inspiration please. As most of us won't retire until 65+ changing careers at 50 would still give 15 years. I love my current job teaching SEMH young people but I don't think I can do it until 65. So, did you change career, get a new/different job at 50+ if so what, I'd love to hear it..... or just any advice for a career changing old teacher. Thanks Grin

I haven't but in a similar situation in that I work in education and I really feel like I need to do something else!

No advice either, but also following for inspiration!

I did, but only by accident, after a loooong time off with DD. I was also in Education (adult and post-16).

I volunteered with a welfare rights charity and got a job there. It's hardly a career though.

I miss being a "professional". Still some time left!

I saw a great job advertised today, managerial level in a charity and I was so tempted to go for it.... not sure I'm quite brave enough to leave teaching yet though.

@ageingdisgracefully
That sounds great though if you're passionate about it anyway.
The other factor though is salary, I'm reliant on only my salary so have to find something that pays enough to live on. Hmm

Yes! Took time out to do a PhD and am now a university researcher. Best thing I ever did.

WhyNotMe40 · 01/02/2020 21:23

I have a plan to retrain, go back to college etc and get out of teaching.
Whether I will actually do it before 50 though....

ageingdisgracefully · 01/02/2020 21:44

Go for that job! If you don't get it, so what?

Aurignacian · 01/02/2020 21:52

I’m currently doing an MSc and hope to carry on to a PhD in archaeology. I’m 55 and currently still working in my old profession part time

Oh wow I'm very impressed by people returning to full time study. Did you find it easy to get your brain working? Mine's a bit creaky!!

Hope to qualify this year as a psychotherapist. I have worked a long time in welfare work feel like this career path gives me a new set of opportunities and I can work independently if the employed opportunities don't offer me the flexibility I think I need.
