For years(10+) I finally justified buying a wardrobe for me. £17.99 cloth diy assembly kit. Like a wendy house. Tubes and brackets. For 48 hours, amazing. Clothes on hangers, actually hanging. Socks, pants and bras on little shelves, all neatly sorted. Lovely. Shoes and handbags, sorted. Top roof, craft and yarn in storage boxes. Perfect.
Two cats later. Shredded. Ripped. Torn. Two surviving shelves of motley bundle of undies. Ah well. Cats are happy.
Over the years, various old furniture bits, broken or unused. Stored away. For years I yearned for getting rid of. How much nicer would my house be without this old, stored away tat? Finally had a bit of spare cash. Local man with a van. Out with the old chair, table, bed frame, mismatched chairs etc. Wow, amazing...nope. I had so many years of ignoring them, that when they went, I barely noticed.
Had a coffee table. Small, 2nd hand. Always full of just everything. I convinced myself, If I just had a large, new coffee table, my downstairs would look smart, nice and neat.
Bought a brand new coffee table(a first) but the clutter just seems to have spread sideways. If I am brutally honest, on table top I have 24 things. Similar on the shelf. The cats like to sit on it though...
So, what did you do or buy or organize that just really didn't live up to your expectations?

A homemade pom pom blanket. Sodding hours I spent on it, it was massive.
The child took one look and then whined I hadn't made a rainbow instead.
I hate the bastard thing. It traps dirt too

what’s a Victorian Market?

According my primary teachers an exciting once a year event where you got to mince pie with meat in and mulled wine and old style sweets were handed out and everyone dressed up and went on rides and watched street performers and lots of faux victorian items for sale.

One we went to one place in nearby city lots and lots huts - many rows of them - with people wearing vaguely old-fashioned costume. While there were lots of huts they all seem to sell the same things mainly cheese, yep £5 fudge and very expensive alcohol and occasional craft style item.

The kids did go on a very small Ferris style wheel ride and got to eat roasted marshmallows and DH got roasted chestnuts. They were okay with it but I felt disappointed somehow.

I’m not sure what I expected really just more victorian feel I guess- it was very like the Christmas/German markets that pop up but somehow less exciting and less full of interesting/different foods and items to buy and expensive though I was expecting that.

A Range Rover. It Broke down a few times and cost a lot to fix. Was gone in 6 months.

A really expensive haircut - a new me I thought! I went armed with a photo or two, but had to try not to cry at the result. Now I just trim it myself.
Also most farmer’s/craft markets - they sound nice but feel awkward and often take place in dingy, chilly halls. Give me Lidl any day.

@Bluewavescrashing we had the same experience with Jimmy Carr, left half way through

Went to Thailand. I'd always wanted to. Hated it. From the posters in the airport one showing lovely trees (eh?) and asking in an obsequious way saying welcome tourists but please leave the children of Thailand alone...in comparison to the highly threatening tone of the drugs warning poster. I knew I wouldn't like it from that point on. We got attacked by a dog, a passer by on a moped chased it off before it could do any real damage, ds was allergic to the super mosquitos there and came out in dreadful painful huge lumps, we all came back infested with nits and I was diagnosed with walking pneumonia the day after getting home. Well not be back.

WendyMoiraAngelaDarling · 01/02/2020 18:37

We'll

I used to think that was just me.

I remember DH was worried after I'd taken photos of what I wanted to some where expensive and was crying as they'd done same hair cut I'm always given and a length way shorter than I'd asked for as apparently my curly hairs unusal because it bounces up without the weight of the cut off hair Hmm.

Then saw some threads on here and realised it perfectly normal what ever price you pay.

A whale watching trip. I was so excited about it for weeks. In reality me and most passengers spent about 7 hours throwing up. I did see a few whales briefly, but it was an awful day. And I paid a lot for the privilege.

BarbaraofSeville · 01/02/2020 18:42

I scuba dive and there is an underwater sculpture museum in lanzarote that I've wanted to do since the day it opened a few years ago.

Did it a few weeks ago and it was just a bit meh plus it cost extra above a normal dive. The second dive I did that day was much more interesting.

@pigdogridesagain 😂

Were you inspired by ASMR too or was it just something you took a fancy to? I was gutted 😆

something2say · 01/02/2020 20:24

I always wanted to be a guitar player and singer doing gigs.

I am a guitar player and I sing and really enjoy it. I joined a band and they gigged once or twice a month. I realised that it's about long drives, getting into a long dress in a freezing toilet, yes the gigs were fun but then I had to drive back at 1am, knackered, hair five inches wet with sweat, sober, dragging cases and amps up the stairs and then have to be at work for 8am. Rock n roll!!

Prefer playing here at home. Can't be arsed with Kate nights these days.

MontanaSkies · 01/02/2020 20:58

Eating a sugar cube. I was about 7 and they always looked so sparkly and tempting. I thought it'd be like a delicious sweet. Finally stole one at the church hall coffee morning, put it in my mouth... and it was like crumbly, gritty dust. I've never truly got over it.

willowmelangell · 01/02/2020 22:24

@NeverGotMyPuppy oh dear. Not quite the same but, I once waited 7 years to jump the man of my dreams. It took twenty minutes to get undressed, DTD, we got dressed and he left.
@starlingsintheslipstream I would not be without my old processor! Replacements bought but it still does me proud!
@Avelinebread hahahaha
@Freshstart40 duly noted. No hair wraps.
@TheWildWoods I am still laughing. The pictures it conjures...
@karencantobe I knew it! A lot of money for being really ill.
@MontanaSkies Haha I thought a tin of peaches in syrup was the ultimate in puddings. Nope. Turns out it is just a sickly mess.

DP and I went to the BBC Good Food Show in Birmingham years ago. It was a 2 hour drive and we were childfree thanks to the grandparents so it was like a very rare date day for us. We were so bored. Everything was expensive, all the cash machines charged a fee, and we were just bored! We both love food, and I love to cook, I thought I'd be in my element. I'm not really sure what I actually expected. Who knew looking at food would be so boring? Grin

Giggorata · 02/02/2020 03:27

Going to the races. It might help if I had the slightest inclination towards gambling but I don't. So bored...

nuttymoon · 02/02/2020 04:13

I enjoyed learning to play the bagpipes but it was a bit Meh when I demonstrated Auld Lang syne to an audience of family as they hid their enthusiasm well. I suppose they didn't want to appear over keen.

BustedDreams · 02/02/2020 05:21

@starlingsintheslipstream noooo, Kitchen Aid mixer is fantastic. Not only does it make the most fabulous buttercream; I have attachments to grate and make ice cream. It’s my favourite bit of kitchen kit after my bean to cup coffee machine Grin

I’m meh about my food processor. Literally after seconds of use the clean up of the machine takes ages! Always think twice before pulling it out to use.

I with folks about craft/Christmas markets... over priced tat.

I’ll also second silk pillow slips being marvellous for skin and hair.
