Stupid question about cars

Sorry for stupid question, just checking.

It's ok, isn't it, to leave an uninsured car parked on the street, so long as it is taxed?

Thank you!

No. Police could impound it as you are breaking the law, as a quick google would have told you. How did you (or whoever owns it) manage to tax it?

Well I never! It was uninsured for months on our driveway and nothing ever happened.

I didn't Google as I thought it would be ok.

Better get on to the insurance company then - thank you!

On the street or on the driveway? Your posts contradict each other

DeltaAlphaDelta · 01/02/2020 09:53

It would be ok on a driveway as its private land. Its when you move it to a road then you have problems.

Oldraver · 01/02/2020 09:53

Well nothing would happen with an uninsured car on a driveway.

mencken · 01/02/2020 09:54

if it is on the driveway and declared as SORN, you don't need to insure it as long as it doesn't move. You are of course stuffed if it is stolen.

if it is on the street it needs the full set of tax, mot and insurance.

which one is it? And why keep an unused car anyway?

2catsblack · 01/02/2020 10:00

Agree with the post above. I made a mistake with a car kept in a garage by taxing it but not taking out insurance. I got a fine.

akkakk · 01/02/2020 10:05

There is now a law on continuous insurance
Unless the car is declared SORN it must be insured wherever you have it

BalloonSlayer · 01/02/2020 10:20

I'm not contradicting myself cuckooken, Grin it's on my driveway but getting in the way and so I thought it could go on the street as it is taxed.

It is still on the drive and I am on the blower to the insurance company (on hold for all eternity) while typing this.

It was on our driveway uninsured untaxed and uninsured for many months* last year (year before?) and we didn't get fined or anything. Even though someone else in street's car got clamped for being untaxed and parked on the road.

  • Odd circumstances beyond our control; we were not able to tax and insure it.

Sorry that really wasn't clear from the 2 posts.

I wouldn't have an uninsured car anyway. If it goes up in flames you are fucked.

AlwaysCheddar · 01/02/2020 11:09

Did you SORN your car?

BalloonSlayer · 01/02/2020 11:55

No I didn't, I was going to but I couldn't see where to click so I just bought the tax instead ( v cheap for this little car).

@cuckooken sorry, me banging on about the car being uninsured on the drive was because of reading the link that DadDadDad sent where it says it's got to be insured even if on your driveway. Some people answering me on this thread don't seem to know that either so it's not just me!

It needs to be sorn if it's on your driveway , I don't think you can sorn and park on the street as it's on a public road , your drive is private land so that's ok .
Just get it SORN and leave on drive or get rid completely . why bother with the hassle of parking on the road and leaving it , having to get insurance and annoying your neighbours ? ,

mencken · 01/02/2020 12:12

here you go.

It was on our driveway uninsured untaxed and uninsured for many months last year (year before?) and we didn't get fined or anything. Even though someone else in street's car got clamped for being untaxed and parked on the road

Because the vital point was that your car was taxed and parked on private land and theirs was on the road.

On private land, it doesn't need to be taxed or insured, but the second it goes on the road, legally it needs to be taxed and insured. Now, depending on where you live depends on whether you would get caught. Obviously it's much higher if you live on the main road compared with a quiet back street. But that's the law and there's always the chance of a car being reported as untaxed/uninsured if a police officer/PCSO walks by, or is reported by a neighbour.
