Lake district help

Mrspimplepopper · 01/02/2020 09:00

We are taking the kids (ds 8 and dd 10) for a few days in feb half term. Please can anyone recommend stuff to do?

We are also taking my parents so long strenuous walks are out. My mum is recovering from a heart attack which she had just after christmas.

I'm thinking more lake tour, fresh air and lots of tea room stops for my mum.

Thankyou

There’s loads to do! Which part of The Lakes are you staying in? (No point in recommending nice stuff only to find I’m suggesting South Lakes stuff when you’re in Keswick!).

Boat trip on one on the lakes. They stop in several places so you can get on & off, do some stuff then back on the boat.

Chester's by the Bridge for lunch - great veggie food & cakes. Flat walk along the river. Nice shop so your mum could stay there while you walk.

Osprey watching, again you can walk & parents do less

Wordsworth house & garden

The towns all have different attractions - ambleside, beswick, grasmere, coniston.- and are good for a potter.

Trip out to the coast via cockermouth.

Most things are outside & involve walking/being active as that's the lakes attraction.

Walk around derwent water. Shame you can’t climb catbells as that’s a good one for the kids Smile.

World of Beatrix Potter. Dd was 10 and not too old when we took her. Specially if its dodgy weather. I loved it and I'm late 40's!

It only takes a few mins so not really an outing, but Sarah Nelson's Grasmere Gingerbread is amazing and you can smell it in the air long before you reach the tiny shop!

Grasmere is a nice afternoon out, there's the gingerbread shop, Dove Cottage (wordsworths house), Allan bank national trust place is a nice place to spend an hour or two, lots of cafes.

It might be too far, but the ravenglass and eskdale railway is fun. There is a pub near by where you could leave mum or take her on a short walk.
Buttermere is lovely and totally walkable but you could also just walk up one side and double back. I like it as it’s an easy loop compared to the big lakes.
