Emma, yet another version, will be released soon. I'm not impressed with the cast.

Which version of Emma is your favorite please?

The 2009 mini series with Romola Garai and Jonny Lee Miller is my favourite. The new one looks fairly quirky, I will probably go and see it at the cinema.

I love Gwyneth Paltrow's version, but Mr Knightley seemed to have a perpetual stupid smile. posterMetheven : I quite like Romola Garai and it's a shame we can't see her more often. Probably living in the States now..

I'm afraid I find Gwyneth Paltrow slightly too annoying to watch (in anything!) to enjoy her version, and yes Mr. Knightley was a bit wishy washy. The Kate Beckinsale version wasn't bad, but I thought Mark Strong was a bit too bossy as Mr. Knightley. Romola Garai was in The Windermere Children on tv just the other day.

I've only seen the Kate Beckinsale version, couldn't make it to the end of the others, too cringeworthy. It's my least favourite Austen by a mile, Emma just isn't very likeable. Just don't bother with Emma at all and watch the 2007 version of Persuasion instead.

Clueless! Grin

WarriorsComeOutToPlayay · 31/01/2020 18:20

Came on to say Clueless but FourEyesGood beat me to it!

iem0128 · 31/01/2020 18:42

Oh, yes! Clueless is the best! I would sit there and watch it again and again and again! Just want to pinch Paul Rudd's face! Such a lovely complexion. Everything clicks in that film!

Clueless is the best for lots of things, but especially for catching the character of Emma. That knowing everything that there is to know about her own tiny bit of society but not understanding the rest of the world. It's the combination of sophistication and naivety that other versions of Emma didn't get right at all.

Jonny Lee Miller was a very good Mr Knightly though, just as good as Paul Rudd if not as cute.

JulietJanuary · 31/01/2020 18:53

Kate Beckinsale version.

JulietJanuary · 31/01/2020 18:54

Clueless is v good.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 31/01/2020 19:16

Mark Strong/Kate Beckinsale/Prunella Scales (Miss Bates)
By a mile.

HelenaJustina · 31/01/2020 19:21

Kate Beckinsale by a country mile, but looking forward to watching and critiquing the new one! Miranda Hart as Miss Bates could be great...

iem0128 · 01/02/2020 07:24

I like Jonny Lee Miller and wonder how he managed to become the first husband of Angelina Jolie!.

I have never watched Mark Strong's version.

Romola Garai and JLM was I think the most romantic Emma. Honestly the only one where I've not been slightly skeeved by the pairing!

Clueless is the best adaptation.

iem0128 · 01/02/2020 07:44

I'm so glad that I have started a swear word free thread. Yes, Clueless reigns supreme!

I studied Emma for A Level so have always had a soft spot for it!

I do like the Gwyneth Paltrow version which disturbs me, as I have always found her slightly off-putting as an actor. I have the same feelings about Shakespeare in Love, which I adore and also dislike because of her (and obviously Weinstein, now).

Clueless is excellent and captured beautifully the learning process that Emma/Cher goes through.

Lovestonap · 01/02/2020 08:32

Kate Beckinsale version was great. Still remember lovely Mr Knightly telling her off 'it was very badly done Emma!'. We'll skip over the fact that actually their relationship in the end was proper weird as he'd known her since she was a little girl because, you know, Austen.
