Does tofu give everyone stomach cramps?

Or is it just a select few?

I've always assumed it does it to everyone but now I'm wondering...?

You thought that every time anyone eats tofu they are then too ill to eat anything else for a day?
I mean that’s why she said, “or is it just a select few?”. Comprehension is waining on MN.

Tofu fine, quorn as weird as it sounds depends on the product. The roast and the sausages fine, the pieces and the mince.. poop city!

devilsadv0caat · 31/01/2020 08:33

No but then I’ve never been willing to eat a sufficient quantity of tofu, quorn or tempeh for it to have any effects.
People aren’t shovelling packloads in at a time, people are affected by a normal serving size, as well you know.

They are all pretty unpleasant texturally and taste of sod all.
You’re cooking must be pretty bad then.

HoppingPavlova · 31/01/2020 08:34

Nope, no problems here with tofu.

WhereShallWeMoveTo · 31/01/2020 08:34

I guess as a product of soya beans, tofu can be difficult to digest like lots of legumes and pulses. I Iove lentils but they play havoc with my digestive system.

bookmum08 · 31/01/2020 08:34

I used to like Quorn but it started doing funny things to my tummy so I have given it up but recently I fancied my homemade lasagne so I used soya mince. It didn't bloat me up and make me uncomfortable but OMG the farting! I could not stop. For hours. Thankfully not smelly ones but my bum just would not shut up.

GooodMythicalMorning · 31/01/2020 08:36

not tofu but quorn makes me ill for days. last time I thought I was dying. dh thought I was making it up til he made dinner with it without telling me and within an hour so ill. I was so cross.

👏

I’ve always wondered this about pulses and legumes and the push towards mass veganism. If beef cattle are one of biggest threats to the environment because of the cows’ methane production, if we stop eating beef and start getting our protein from pulses and legumes, surely we replace the cows’ methane with human methane?

leckford · 31/01/2020 08:40

Soya is one of the triggers for IBS. Soya is one of the crops grown on deforested land in places like Brazil

WhereShallWeMoveTo · 31/01/2020 08:53

Great for the planet then leckford Hmm

TheNoiseHurts · 31/01/2020 10:00

You really thought tofu gave everyone stomach cramps, to the point where they couldn't eat for the rest of the day?

Oh no no no. I just ate a fuck load yesterday which is why I feel so bad today.

If I just eat a normal amount I just get some pain.

OP posts:
BuffaloCauliflower · 31/01/2020 10:42

@leckford it might be an IBS trigger for some people but it isn’t for all, no need to generalise. Soya is grown on deforested land, yes, but 90% of it goes on animal feed for meat production, so if you’re concerned about that the answer is eat less meat not less tofu

I have had tofu outside of the home - Ive never actually cooked it. I have had it in the UK and in Japan, including at some very highly rated Japenese restaurants which specialises in tofu (kaiseki or similar.) Lots of tofu cooked in a range of ways.

Still really odd texture - as said earlier, a lot of it had the texture of wet bread. Else it was more slimy. It wasn't quite as bad when it was firmer, almost crumbly. But I still didn't particularly enjoy it. The experience of being in traditional Japenese restaurants was fab - but not the tofu!

BuffaloCauliflower · 31/01/2020 12:05

@Aragog firm tofu that’s been treated properly and well marinated is lovely and not difficult to do at home, not slimy or crumbly. People just aren’t used to cooking it here so don’t know what to do

Osra · 31/01/2020 12:08

Nope, I eat it several times a week!

WhereShallWeMoveTo · 31/01/2020 12:17

Aragon I’ve never cooked them but I’ve eaten tofu and tempeh in some pretty god restaurants including Nobu and Hakkasan, so no, I don’t think it’s my cooking that’s the problem.

WitchQueenofDarkness · 31/01/2020 12:38

I make my own. It's much much nicer than the commercial ones.

I thought I didn't like tofu until I tried homemade

Cheeryandmerry · 31/01/2020 12:39

No, I love it. Quorn makes me really unwell though.

Aragog · 31/01/2020 12:40

It wasn't me who said it was people's bad cooking - I was saying the opposite in fact. I just quoted another poster.

BuffaloCauliflower - it depends on the type of tofu and how it is prepared. Different types of tofu and different ways of cooking tofu results in different textures and flavours. There is not just one way to cook tofu and there isn't just one type of tofu either. However, just like with any other food - tofu is just not to everyone's taste/preference, regardless of how it is cooked and presented.

If baked beans are soy I wonder if I’ve developed an intolerance
My tum was bad after the beans last week

WhereShallWeMoveTo · 31/01/2020 13:23

What is quorn made of?

TheNoiseHurts · 31/01/2020 13:28

Baked beans aren't soya.

leckford · 31/01/2020 17:37

I think Quorn is some sort of fungus, which can cause IBS. Baked beans can also be a problem, yes I have been to a proper dietician. I could never be vegan, even if I wanted to, too many problem foods.

WhereShallWeMoveTo · 31/01/2020 17:44

Baked beans are usually haricot beans. Soya beans are soya beans.

PurpleCrowbarWhereIsLangCleg · 31/01/2020 19:20

No, but (having eaten it all over the world) I find it sufficiently meh that if it upset my stomach I'd have no difficulty cutting it out. It's ok, just so bland that I'd always rather have loads of veggies instead.

Quorn now - oh yes. I was vegetarian for years & ate loads of it (exh was passionately vegetarian but a crap cook, so if it was his turn in the kitchen we all ate quorn). If I touch it now, I'm farting like a drayhorse for hours! Dc report similar after staying with their dad.
