Can I ask a stupid question about baby clothing?!

I usually put one month old DS in a vest and babygrow as he hates being changed and having his clothes switched over at the moment and it’s easier!
When we go out I put him in a pramsuit and a hat on top of that as it’s chilly at the moment.
When I put him in the baby carrier I also put him in a pram suit (ergo not a sling).

But I’ve been given some sets that are little vests with matching leggings and socks. I just wondered with these kinds of sets would you put an extra vest on underneath? As normally he would have two layers on top IYSWIM and if I just put the vest with the matching design on he would only have one.
Or would you put a little cardigan over the top and just remove that when you went out and just put the pramsuit on - but he would still be short a layer.

I’m a first time mum as you can probably tell and slightly baffled by the clothing!

:)

I'd put the vest on underneath. My DS always wore poppered vests (unless in a heatwave) until he was toilet trained.

TobyeBella · 31/01/2020 07:09

Or can you put a long sleeve t shirt on top of the patterned vest?

SimonJT · 31/01/2020 07:10

I read clothing as cloning, I was intrigued!

@TobyeBella that’s what I was thinking of doing - the long sleeved t shirt.
I feel like the layering is a minefield I’m always worried I won’t give him enough or he will be too hot.

Babies generally need to wear one more layer than you. I think a cardi over a decorative vest or a long sleeved tshirt equals the vest and babygro combi

Dennisreynoldsduster · 31/01/2020 07:10

Ha @SimonJT I’m sorry, this thread isn’t half as intriguing as all that! Grin

I use short sleeved vests for under baby grows at night and long sleeved vests to go with trousers and jumpers for a day time outfit. Baby is 6 months old now. I would probably put her in a pram suit and depending on the thickness of the jumper I would take it off before putting her in.

BriefDisaster · 31/01/2020 07:17

I got lots of similar sets and used cardigans with them.

TiggeryBear · 31/01/2020 07:24

When my DC were younger (youngest is 19months) they were typically growing in to stuff at this time of year that was more suited to warmer weather, so rather than the stuff not getting worn I'd add the long sleeve vests under the short sleeve tops/"pretty" vests & add cardigans/thin jackets/jumpers as necessary when indoors but remove extra layer under pram/snow suits but add blankets if still cold.

THAT90sBITCH · 31/01/2020 07:26

These sets annoy me. If someone bought them for my baby i would i think put another vest underneath. I avoid these sets. Are you listening H&M?

Urkiddingright · 31/01/2020 08:17

A cardigan over the top would be fine.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 31/01/2020 08:27

With those sets I'd just use the vest as a top with a cardigan over the top but I also hate them and only used them in the warmer weather because of the extra layer thing!

StopMakingATitOfUrselfNPissOff · 31/01/2020 08:43

I'd go cardi over the top.

Btw, I wouldn't have a baby in a pram suit in a sling, they get a lot of heat from you, I'd be worried about overheating

Spied · 31/01/2020 08:47

I wouldn't put another poppered vest underneath the decorative set (assuming that has the poppers too).
Poppers overloadGrin
I'd add a cardigan in these situations.

Dennisreynoldsduster · 31/01/2020 08:50

@StopMakingATitOfUrselfNPissOff what would you put them in in the carrier, I have wondered about this

I hate these sets too! Cute in theory but annoying. I don’t want to have to think about clothing logistics in my sleep deprived state! Glad it’s not just me.

@spied I’m just wondering about under the pram suit as cardigan would be too hot. Maybe pram suit and extra blanket as a PP mentioned although he always bats the blanket off his top half!

GiveHerHellFromUs · 31/01/2020 09:00

@Dennisreynoldsduster do you have a carrier rather than sling so legs and arms are out? I have one of those and use a pram suit if we're out and about.

Dennisreynoldsduster · 31/01/2020 09:02

Yes I have both but only put him in pram suit for the carrier

OopsPregnantAgain · 31/01/2020 09:03

Don't overthink it - dress him in one more layer than you're wearing. If he's sweating then take a layer off. If his torso is cool to the touch then add a layer.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 31/01/2020 09:03

I think they'll get too cold if they're not in a pramsuit so keep doing it (IMO!). I definitely will Grin

Deathraystare · 31/01/2020 09:05

Not a daft question to me but then I don't have kids of my own and am often flumoxed (sp?) when buying clothes for my nephews. I spend many hours looking at stuff wondering when they would wear it/is it pyjamas or just a top and trousers. That's after I have managed to fight my way through the pink glitter and rainbow stuff first!
